Overview
Uusi Vantaa — New Vantaa, in Finnish — was founded 400 years ago by a cohort from Koskinen's Reach (GJ 876) who wanted what Koskinen's Reach could not offer: quiet. The founding party was small, Finnish-heritage like their parent community, and led by Aino Järvinen, a metallurgist who had spent two decades in Koskinen's Reach's mineral extraction operations before concluding that the binary star system's periodic navigational disruptions and the community's inward-looking anxieties were not worth enduring when a perfectly serviceable K-type star sat one gate away with no one living under it.
The K2 classification — the colon indicates uncertain or approximate spectral typing — places GJ 3820 as an orange dwarf, warmer and brighter than the M-type stars that dominate this region of the north_reach. The difference is immediately visible to anyone arriving from Koskinen's Reach: the light here is amber rather than rust, the shadows are longer and less harsh, and the primary body's surface temperature allows liquid water to exist in open basins without geothermal assistance. Järvinen's expedition report described the light as "the colour of late afternoon in a place that has never had a morning," which was not scientifically useful but was accurate enough that it entered the community's oral tradition.
The primary body is a dry world. There are no oceans, no significant river systems, no rainfall cycle worth naming. What water exists collects in shallow endorheic basins fed by subsurface aquifers — mineral-rich pools that evaporate at the margins, leaving salt flats that extend for kilometres in every direction. The landscape is austere: flat ochre plains, salt deposits glinting amber under the K2 star, and a sky that is permanently hazy with fine mineral dust that refracts the starlight into something that looks, to human eyes, like a world made of old gold.
Järvinen brought metallurgy, and the world rewarded her for it. The subsurface geology contains accessible deposits of rare-earth-adjacent minerals — not spectacularly rich, but concentrated enough for small-scale extraction by a competent team with the right equipment. Over four centuries, Uusi Vantaa has developed a precision metallurgy operation that processes these minerals into specialised alloy components. The output is small: several hundred kilograms per year of high-specification material that ships through Koskinen's Reach to buyers in the broader corridor. The market is narrow — gate maintenance components, scientific instrument housings, specialised fabrication stock — but it is consistent, and the quality reputation has been built over generations of careful work.
The community numbers roughly 900 permanent residents and has the character of a Finnish village transplanted to an alien desert: orderly, reserved, and intensely private. Social life revolves around the sauna tradition, which Järvinen's cohort brought from Koskinen's Reach and which has been adapted to local conditions — the mineral-rich basin water, heated, produces a bathing experience that long-term residents describe as therapeutic and visitors describe as alarming. Community governance follows the Koskinen model: council-based, consensus-driven, slow. The isolation is total; one gate in, one gate out, and the gate leads only to Koskinen's Reach, which is itself a spur end. Uusi Vantaa is a dead end off a dead end. The residents consider this a feature.
Supply Dependency
All manufactured goods and technical equipment route inward through Koskinen's Reach (GJ 876), which is itself dependent on multi-hop supply chains to the broader corridor. The double-spur position makes Uusi Vantaa one of the most supply-chain-remote permanently inhabited systems in the north_reach. The community compensates through extreme self-sufficiency in consumables: food production from aquifer-irrigated greenhouses, fabrication of basic tools and structural components from local mineral stock, and a cultural emphasis on repair over replacement that has been reinforced by four centuries of expensive logistics. Alloy products ship outward through Koskinen's Reach; the value per kilogram is high enough to justify the transport costs, which is the fundamental economic equation that keeps the settlement viable.
Faction Notes
The Järvinen Works — the metallurgical cooperative descended from the founder's original extraction and processing operation. Manages mineral sourcing rights, alloy production, and export logistics. The current works master, Veikko Järvinen-Aho, is a direct descendant of the founder and maintains the family tradition of personally signing off on every outgoing shipment — a quality assurance practice that doubles as a governance ritual.
The Basin Council — Uusi Vantaa's governing body, modelled on Koskinen's Reach's Community Council. Handles all non-metallurgical governance: land use, water allocation, agricultural scheduling, social disputes. The Council and the Järvinen Works operate as parallel institutions with overlapping membership; in practice, the works master and the council chair consult on everything because the community is too small for institutional separation to be meaningful.
The Sauna Circle — not a formal institution but a social practice with governance implications. Major community decisions are informally negotiated in the sauna before being formally presented to the Basin Council. Outsiders who do not participate in the sauna tradition find themselves excluded from the informal consensus process, which has occasionally created friction with visiting traders or technical contractors.
Silence Topic
One of the three mineral deposit areas currently licensed for extraction is showing declining yield — the accessible vein has been worked for 200 years and is approaching exhaustion. The Järvinen Works' internal geological surveys have identified a replacement deposit, but it lies beneath the primary settlement's water aquifer. Extraction would require either relocating the settlement's water infrastructure — a multi-decade project — or accepting contamination risk to the aquifer during extraction operations. The works master has not disclosed the yield decline to the Basin Council or to external trading partners. Current contracts are being fulfilled from stockpiled material while the internal debate continues.

Narrative Hook
A geological surveyor from an inward university has submitted a research permit application to study Uusi Vantaa's subsurface aquifer system — the same aquifer that sits above the replacement mineral deposit — and the application arrived three weeks after the Järvinen Works' internal survey was completed, which should not be a coincidence because that survey was not shared externally.
Calibration Note
The K2: classification indicates an uncertain or approximate K-type spectral designation. The world described here — dry, mineral-rich, amber-lit — is consistent with a K2 star's output. Wave_2 dead_end settlement at hop 5 is plausible as a daughter colony of the adjacent Koskinen's Reach community, founded by a cohort that chose to extend further outward along the same spur.
