THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — UUSI VANTAA (GJ 3820)
UUSI VANTAA — the second system by this name, a dead end off Koskinen's Reach, which is itself a dead end — was founded by people who looked at their parent community's binary-star anxiety and periodic navigational disruptions and decided they would rather have a quiet K-type star and no neighbors at all.
The Decision
Aino Järvinen was a metallurgist who spent two decades in Koskinen's Reach's mineral extraction operations before concluding that the community's inward-looking anxieties were not worth enduring when a perfectly serviceable star sat one gate away with no one living under it. She took a cohort. She left. The world she found is dry — no oceans, no significant river systems, no rainfall worth naming. What water exists collects in shallow endorheic basins fed by subsurface aquifers, mineral-rich pools that evaporate at the margins, leaving salt flats extending for kilometres. The light is amber rather than rust. The sky is permanently hazy with fine mineral dust that refracts the K2 star into something that looks, to human eyes, like a world made of old gold.
Järvinen's expedition report described it as "the colour of late afternoon in a place that has never had a morning." This was not scientifically useful. It was accurate enough to enter the community's oral tradition.
She brought metallurgy, and the world rewarded her. The subsurface geology contains concentrated rare-earth-adjacent minerals. Four centuries later, the Järvinen Works produces several hundred kilograms per year of high-specification alloy components — gate maintenance parts, scientific instrument housings, specialised fabrication stock — that ship through Koskinen's Reach to buyers in the broader corridor. The value per kilogram is high enough to justify the transport costs across a double spur. The community numbers roughly 900 residents and has the character of a Finnish village transplanted to an alien desert: orderly, reserved, intensely private.
The Aquifer
One of the three mineral deposit areas currently under extraction is approaching exhaustion. The replacement deposit lies beneath the primary settlement's water aquifer. Extraction would require relocating the water infrastructure — a multi-decade project — or accepting contamination risk during operations. The works master, Veikko Järvinen-Aho, has not disclosed the yield decline to the Basin Council or to external trading partners. Current contracts are being fulfilled from stockpile while the internal debate continues.
A geological surveyor from an inward university has submitted a permit application to study the subsurface aquifer system — the same aquifer above the replacement deposit. The application arrived three weeks after the Järvinen Works' internal survey was completed, which was not shared externally.
Practical Information
Uusi Vantaa is five hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Koskinen's Reach — a dead end off a dead end. One of the most supply-chain-remote permanently inhabited systems in the north arc. The sauna tradition uses mineral-rich basin water, heated; long-term residents describe it as therapeutic. Visitors describe it as alarming. Major community decisions are informally negotiated in the sauna before being formally presented to the Basin Council. Outsiders who do not participate find themselves excluded from the informal consensus process, which is not an accident.
