THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — NYRHEIM
NYRHEIM means "new home" in Norwegian, and the name is accurate in the way that names given by people who have just arrived somewhere are always accurate: the home is genuinely new, the newness is still the defining fact about it, and what it will eventually become is still being argued about.
The Founding
Wave 5 settlement at hop 7. Most systems at this distance were reached in earlier waves. Someone chose to start here anyway, forty years ago, using a loop position that was already there — two gate connections, inward to Torsby and outward to GJ 414A — because you do not need to build gates that already exist.
The founding story is partly what it claims to be: workers and families from Torsby's outer residential districts choosing independence over the Lindqvist family's industrial governance. This account is accurate as far as it goes. It elides the other third of the founding membership, who arrived from the political fringe of Freiholt having lost an internal argument there about whether the Compact should police downstream use of its members' exports. Their position was that policing downstream use was incompatible with genuine commercial autonomy. They were not wrong. They also made enemies of everyone on the other side of the argument, and those people now hold council seats in Freiholt.
The founding station — called the Rig by residents — is still being built. Construction continues. Six thousand people. The founding ideological division produced a governance structure with two chambers: a practical council that handles resource allocation and a principles council that holds ratification authority over governance decisions. The practical council gets things done. The principles council ensures they are getting done for the right reasons. Efficiency is how cooperative communities become the thing they left, and Nyrheim's founders have opinions about this.
The Dispute That Moved
The founding bloc from Freiholt brought a live governance dispute with them when they relocated. The argument about downstream export controls has never been resolved — it was relocated from Freiholt to Nyrheim, where it continues at a distance from the people it originally concerned. Those people now hold seats on the Compact council that Nyrheim depends on. Compact governance sessions involving both parties are conducted with a courtesy that communicates everything about what is not being said.
Practical Information
Nyrheim is seven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Torsby and GJ 414A. The transit fee dispute with the Gate Corporation is in its twenty-second year. The principles council has ratified the current fee structure three times. The practical council has implemented it continuously.
