THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — HAVNFJORD
HAVNFJORD is a world named for its coastline by people who knew exactly what they were looking for and were prepared to accept rust-red light on gray water if that was what came with it.
The Fjords
The name is Norwegian. It means harbor fjord. The settlers who arrived three hundred years ago looked at the primary world's long coastal indentations — deep channels cut by ancient glaciation into a coastline that stretches for thousands of kilometers — and saw something they recognized. The M6.5 star is dim enough that the world is warm primarily through its own geology and the thermal buffering of the fjords' liquid water. The light is rust-red. The days are short. The cold-adapted crops in the mid-latitude growing regions yield well under supplemental artificial lighting. The fjord communities found the world genuinely hospitable, which is not the same as comfortable, but which turned out to be sufficient.
Three centuries of settlement have layered additional immigrant communities into the original Norwegian founding heritage. The fjord settlements have never fully federated — each developed its own local character, and the planetary council that governs shared infrastructure manages consensus rather than commanding it. This has produced occasional tension and has never produced a catastrophe, which is a reasonable result for a governing model that depends on everyone agreeing to agree.
The Balance
What Havnfjord produces, Havnfjord largely uses. Light manufacturing developed alongside agriculture — processing facilities, small fabrication plants for local tools and equipment. None of it competes in the broader Reach markets; the transport costs to significant hubs are too high. What leaves the system as export flows through Johannsen's Star toward the inner arc: agricultural surplus, modest and reliable, year after year.
The transit revenue from the loop position funds the infrastructure. The farm communities produce cargo for the stations. The stations serve the loop. The Planetary Council distributes the transit fees according to a formula that has been contested between inland and coastal settlements for generations and is currently operating under a temporary arrangement that has now been temporary for fifteen years. The renegotiation has been deferred. The farming continues.
One of the mid-latitude agricultural cooperatives has been quietly routing its export tonnage through a charter arrangement bypassing the Council's fee structure. Whether the transportation auditor has caught this is unclear. Whether the auditor has been persuaded to look elsewhere is equally unclear.
Practical Information
Havnfjord is four hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Johannsen's Star and GJ 475 outward. The Assembly maintains a small representative office here — one of the more substantive presences at hop 4 in the north arc — because agricultural output relevant to outer-system food security assessments warrants watching. The office and the Planetary Council are cooperative and occasionally tense, which is roughly what you would expect from an institution that monitors export pricing and an institution that sets it.
The fjords are, by most accounts, genuinely beautiful in the rust-red late afternoon. This is not listed as a primary attraction in any official tourism documentation, because Havnfjord does not produce official tourism documentation.
