THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PEMBERTON'S LOOP
PEMBERTON'S LOOP is named for a man who built a transit post at a useful crossing point and had the good sense not to name it anything more ambitious.
The Loop
Traffic moving outward from Wolf 359 to Kampala Gate passes through here. Traffic returning from Kampala Gate toward Wolf 359 passes through here. The system sits at the crossing point and takes a percentage of everything in both directions, which has been its economic function for nearly four centuries. The star is unremarkable. The planets are cold and marginal. Settlement never extended meaningfully beyond the orbital station, because there was nothing on the ground worth the effort and everything worth the effort was already happening in the transit lanes.
The bonded warehousing is the real economy. Goods consigned here under transit bond are legally in transit — not subject to the destination system's tariff regime until released. Operators moving cargo between Tanegashima's fabrication outputs and the outer systems use Pemberton's Loop as a neutral holding point while contracts are finalized. The Assembly maintains a customs inspection office staffed modestly, which is to say: enough to administer the bond system, not enough to police it aggressively. This arrangement has persisted for four centuries and shows no signs of attracting the kind of scrutiny that would require changing it.
What the Cargo Is Worth
The precise valuation of goods held in bond is not publicly disclosed. Operators are not legally required to declare cargo value upon bond entry — only upon release. What passes through Pemberton's Loop, and at what declared value, is known only to the bonding firms and the Assembly customs office, and the latter's records are not accessible without judicial warrant. This is not a scandal. It does not arise in polite conversation. It is simply the way transit bonding works when it is administered by people whose institutional ancestors invented the practice.
Three separate shipping manifests over the past eight months show the same cargo identifier appearing under different consignee names. Whether this represents an oversight, an informal arrangement, or something that will eventually require the customs office to issue a formal opinion is a question the customs office has not yet been asked directly.
Practical Information
Pemberton's Loop is four hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Wolf 359 and Kampala Gate. The station culture is English in founding heritage: dry, transactional, and quietly proud of a reputation for reliability. Pemberton's Loop does not hold cargo hostage or inflate fees arbitrarily. This reputation has made it prosperous in a way that more spectacular systems often are not. Shippers trust it. Couriers know it. Travelers in transit experience it as the kind of place you pass through without incident, which is the highest praise a transit post can receive.
The Pemberton name appears on several of the older warehousing firms. The family itself scattered across the Reach centuries ago, leaving behind the post, the loop, and the machinery of trade.
