THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — XA VỜI
XA VỜI means "far away," chosen by the founding families with the blunt precision of people who had just finished a journey of ten corridor hops and understood exactly what they were describing, and which has in three hundred years become a settled identity: the farming community at the end of the east_reach corridor, where one aperture leads back the way you came and there is nothing else.
The Terminus
The F-type star burns hotter and bluer than most corridor systems, organizing agriculture into intense growing seasons separated by hard rest periods. The Vietnamese founding families brought seed stocks and cultivation techniques adapted to humid, high-light environments, and the primary world rewarded that knowledge. Xa Vời has been feeding parts of the east_reach ever since.
There is no through-traffic. Everyone who arrives here intended to arrive here. The social texture is correspondingly tight — more or less the same families for three hundred years, supplemented by occasional settlers who followed the corridor all the way to its end and decided not to leave. Disputes over water rights, soil allotments, and processing capacity are the political content of civic life, and they are conducted with the seriousness appropriate to questions that actually matter.
The Assembly is a legal abstraction. The Commission is a name in shipping manifests. The agricultural cooperatives — some tracing unbroken records back to the founding wave — are the government, and they are skeptical of instructions from anywhere inward. Three hundred years of distance has produced a community that distinguishes carefully between the law and what the law can actually do here.
The Aperture Readings
The horizon station's aperture has shown irregular activation patterns three times in the last forty years — brief, unexplained cycling events not associated with any scheduled transit. Each time, the station's monitoring recorded it. Each time, the cooperative leadership decided it was an instrument anomaly and filed it internally. The third occurrence was different enough from the first two that the cooperative archives now contain a sealed assessment prepared by the senior station coordinator. The assessment has not been forwarded to the Commission or the Veil Institute. It does not conclude anything. It describes what was observed and notes that it was different.
The cooperative leadership has decided, again and again, that informing anyone outward is a worse outcome than not informing them. Whether this is because the readings are probably anomalous and the cooperative does not want unnecessary institutional attention at the end of the corridor, or because the readings are not anomalous and the cooperative understands what that would mean, is a distinction that only the sealed assessment can clarify.
Practical Information
Xa Vời is nine hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Jeonnam. The primary world grows food. The families have been here for three hundred years. The horizon station is maintained. The aperture has been quiet for the past fourteen years, which is either good news or the longest quiet period so far.
