THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — EISFELD

EISFELD is a German river-meadow name meaning "ice field," flat and useful, and the Thuringian founders who gave it were describing what they found and were not trying to be poetic about it, which turns out to be the appropriate orientation for a system whose purpose is to be reliably in the middle of things.

The Through-Route

Between Ostmark and the dead-end spur at Dunkelholz. That is Eisfeld's position, and Eisfeld has been managing it for four hundred years with the particular competence of a community that has no illusions about what it is. Transit services. Maintenance depots. The light agriculture that feeds a community that prefers not to import food. The transit depot is the social center — people come to watch the transits, not to meet travelers specifically, but to confirm that the corridor is still open and things are still moving and Eisfeld is still on the route. This is what four centuries of being a waypoint produces in a community's psychology.

The transit authority predates the current form of Assembly governance by a century and a half. It knows which records have to be filed to satisfy which oversight requirement, and it files them promptly, and it does not invite attention. The Commission has visited three times in the last century. Three times the records were exactly as they should be.

The Filing System

The transit records for Dunkelholz-bound freight go into a separate filing system from the through-route records. This is administratively sensible: the spur is a distinct route from the through-route, and mixing them would create legitimate organizational problems. The separation also means that a Commission examiner doing a standard audit of the through-route records would not automatically see what has been moving into Dunkelholz. The transit authority knows this. It has never altered a record, never deleted an entry. It organized the filing in a way that makes a focused inquiry into Dunkelholz traffic require a specific request rather than appearing in the standard review.

No one has made that specific request in four hundred years of records. The current transit authority director is connected by family network to three generations of directors before him, which is either a coincidence of local institutional culture or a succession plan, and the distinction has not been examined from outside.

Practical Information

Eisfeld is ten hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Ostmark and Dunkelholz. The M-type star is dim. The maintenance depots are reliable. The records are organized.

Adams of the Guide rates Eisfeld: Meticulous. Separate Filing System Available On Specific Request.
