THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ALTMARK
ALTMARK was named for the original heartland of the Margraviate of Brandenburg, a region whose historical significance derived from being where something important was founded rather than from anything remarkable about the land itself — which, the founders knew, was precisely the right reference for a system they intended to make important.
The Second Hub
Five gates. The second-largest commercial system in the western sector. Heavy fabrication, agriculture, financial services, transit logistics — a genuine economic diversification that few outer corridor systems achieve. The K-type star provides adequate conditions, the cold-tolerant crop strains feed the system and export modest surpluses outward, and the trade volume through five gates has grown a financial services sector that processes commercial instruments for half the western branch.
MVG's regional distribution hub for the outer west is here. The fabrication sector holds several MVG supplier contracts. The commercial council allocates nine seats, of which MVG holds two as a structural fact of registration — the seat allocation is weighted by the size of registered commercial entities, and MVG is the largest registered entity. The four largest independent shipping and fabrication houses hold another four. The three elected seats can block but cannot initiate, which is an arrangement the founding consortium designed and that has worked for two hundred years.
The Assembly's west_reach trade delegate is based at Altmark rather than Hansestadt, because the Assembly will not office itself inside a rival commercial governance body. This creates an interesting situation: the Assembly's political office is in the second hub, where the Merchant Assembly's authority is weaker, and the Assembly delegate conducts diplomacy from that position while Hansestadt conducts the actual commercial business of the corridor.
The Financial Sector Question
The Compact of Westphalia has approached Altmark's governing council three times in forty years. The council has declined without formally refusing. The formula is consistent: Altmark's position requires relationships with all parties, and formal alignment would compromise that function.
The financial services sector arrived at a different answer approximately fifteen years ago, without bothering the governance council about it. Altmark's banks and bond houses now process Compact-registered commercial instruments alongside Assembly-registered ones under local commercial frameworks that predate the Compact's formation and neither recognize nor exclude it. The volume of Compact-registered instruments on the outward routes now exceeds the volume of Assembly-registered ones. The Assembly trade delegate is conducting exploratory dialogue about Altmark's governance position in a system whose financial sector finished the conversation without him.
Some of the Merchant Assembly's senior trade house principals have, privately, been Compact sympathizers for two centuries. They are not unsympathetic. They are also the people who set the tariff schedules that drove the outer west toward the Compact in the first place.
Practical Information
Altmark is six hops from Gateway with five apertures connecting to GJ 3333, GJ 635A, Eisentor, GJ 103, and Hansestadt. The German historical region name communicates founding ambition without requiring explanation.
