THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 354A
GJ 354A has a thin atmosphere — not absent, but thin enough that the difference from comfortable is felt in the pressure differential and addressed by engineering solutions that are available, reliable, and expensive at hop twelve.
The Notation and the Filing
Survey teams noted the atmospheric thinness. They measured it. They confirmed the atmospheric composition falls within the range that makes a world technically habitable. They assessed the engineering solution as available and reliable and expensive. They determined the cost to be not worth bearing at this distance. They filed the report.
That is the complete record of settlement consideration for GJ 354A: four steps, one outcome, perpetual continuation of that outcome. The atmospheric thinness is not an insurmountable problem in the physical engineering sense — the technology exists, the approach is understood, the construction would work. The insurmountability is in the economics of who pays for it at hop twelve with no institutional infrastructure to absorb the initial investment.
The corridor connects GJ 656 to GJ 684B. GJ 354A sits between them as a transit waypoint. Vessels pass through. The horizon station processes their passage. The thin-atmosphered world turns below, breathing in the sense that the pressure differential is within the numbers, unsuitable in the sense that the numbers are not where anyone wants to live without equipment.
Practical Information
GJ 354A is twelve hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 656 and GJ 684B. No services are available. The habitable world's atmosphere is technically breathable and practically marginal. Emergency atmospheric support hardware is recommended for any extended surface activity.
Adams of the Guide rates GJ 354A: Breathable. Barely. The difference between those two words is the settlement history.
