THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SINDRI

SINDRI is a mining system run by a mining corporation that is not, technically, the government, in the same way that the ocean is not, technically, the thing that makes you wet — it is merely the environment in which all wetness occurs.

DSMC

The Dorfhausen Sydney Mining Corporation administers extraction licensing, operates the primary transit infrastructure, employs the majority of the workforce, and controls the allocation queue that determines which of its two minority stakeholders — MVG at Nova Roma and the Gate Corporation at Renaissance — receives favorable treatment in any given quarter. The administrative council that nominally governs non-industrial affairs was constituted under DSMC-drafted charters during Wave 2 settlement. The distinction between the corporation and the council has narrowed over three centuries to the point where mapping the difference requires access to documents the public registry does not include.

The naming convention tells you what you need to know: Witwatersrand for the primary processing hub, Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill for major operational districts, the Krupp belt for the outer extraction zone. The names reference Earth mining heritage. They are not nostalgia. They are a founding-era statement about what this system is for.

The Triangle

MVG and Gate Corporation each hold minority ownership positions — large enough for board seats and preferential supply terms, not large enough to dictate operations. DSMC has maintained this arithmetic deliberately. Both companies have field representatives permanently stationed at Witwatersrand, nominally to manage their supply agreements, functionally to watch each other. The surveillance is symmetric and openly acknowledged. DSMC's administrative leadership regards the mutual observation as a feature: two stakeholders watching each other have less attention available for coordinated oversight of the majority owner.

The allocation committee — which decides whose freight gets loaded first in a given cycle — is staffed by DSMC. MVG and Gate Corporation each lobby it, formally and otherwise, on a continuous basis. The committee's scheduling decisions are made by people who can see both representatives' field activity. The information asymmetry runs one direction.

Deep Operations

The Commission's Kalgoorlie Office handles safety regulation for all surface and near-subsurface operations. What it does not handle — because the relevant facilities were grandfathered under Wave 2 licensing frameworks that predate the Commission's current authority — is inspection access to the deep-bore facilities in the Broken Hill formation. Those areas operate under DSMC's internal safety certification. Workers in the deep facilities have filed seventeen incident reports over the past sixty years referencing conditions the standard classification system does not have a category for. The reports are filed. They are not aggregated. The office that would need to aggregate them does not have access to the facilities they describe.

DSMC's capital investment in the Broken Hill formation has consistently exceeded what the publicly disclosed ore yield would justify. This has been noted in financial analyses prepared for both minority board seats. Neither analysis was shared with the other party.

Practical Information

Sindri is two hops from Gateway with three gate apertures connecting to Nova Roma, Renaissance, and Kensho. The system has the character of a company town that has had three centuries to develop civic institutions without ever fully escaping the original company-town structure. The workers have strong occupational identity. The Guardians have a substantial local chapter. The Commission cannot inspect the facilities the workers consider most dangerous. The food is imported. The ore is excellent.
