THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — YONGJIN

YONGJIN controls the queue, and the queue is the east corridor, and everyone who moves freight into the eastern Reach has learned that the people who manage the queue are very helpful and that their helpfulness has a pattern.

The Gateway

Every freight shipment entering the east corridor from the core passes through Yongjin's scheduling authority. A single-day disruption to gate scheduling here does not stop the freight — it creates a queue that takes four days to clear. This leverage is real. The Assembly maintains a transit oversight office with authority to intervene in scheduling disputes, which is one of the few Assembly functions east corridor operators acknowledge as genuinely useful.

Gate Corporation operates a regional scheduling coordination office here, which is the institutional nucleus around which Yongjin's professional class has organized itself. The Korean-heritage founding community that named the system remains significant, particularly in the older residential districts. The transit authority council uses a procedural framework with roots in Korean civil service tradition, emphasizing documented merit review and competitive credential assessment. This has made the local bureaucracy unusually meritocratic relative to comparable junctions. Whether this is a cultural legacy or an efficient adaptation to a transit-coordination role is a question locals do not find interesting.

The Algorithm

The queue prioritization criteria are publicly documented: hazardous cargo, perishables, medical supply, time-bound contracts, then volume throughput optimization. The actual criteria include, according to persistent freight-operator rumor, a secondary weighting that favors established corridor operators over new entrants. The Commission has audited the algorithm twice and certified it compliant both times. The operators who believe the weighting exists cannot demonstrate it because the Commission found no documented parameter encoding it. The possibility that the weighting is embedded in an undocumented calibration that the Commission did not specifically test for is the question that makes new entrants frustrated and established operators careful to maintain their relationships with the scheduling office.

Practical Information

Yongjin is three hops from Gateway with four gate apertures — a junction connecting Parallax to the east corridor's inner systems. The system does not produce much; it coordinates. The food is adequate. The bureaucracy is efficient. All the operators who run reliably on time seem to share the same legal representation firm.

Adams of the Guide rates Yongjin: Orderly. Results May Vary.
