Supply Dependency
Tanegashima is a net importer of food and heavy machinery, exporting precision components and technical expertise in return. The system's economic anchor is advanced fabrication: Wave 4 settlers who came through the east_reach gate network brought manufacturing traditions and established the first modular shipyard in this band of the north_reach. Gate Corporation contracts for hull components and gate maintenance sub-assemblies have kept those yards viable for a century. Core-direction supply (GJ 845) provides raw stock and transits food from Puerto Rivera and the inner agricultural systems; New Ballarat (GJ 667A) provides transit continuity to the outer systems.
Faction Notes
Tanegashima's governance structure is an Assembly of Technical Delegates — representatives elected by professional guild rather than by geography or population. Each licensed trade guild nominates candidates; all resident adults vote across guilds. The result is a government that looks and sounds like a meritocracy, debates endlessly in technical terms, and produces policy that reliably advantages the established guilds at the expense of newer arrivals. The Concord Assembly finds this arrangement procedurally confusing but does not object to it so long as assessments are paid on schedule, which they are.
The Lattice Commission has a small monitoring station here, less for enforcement than for technical interest: the spectroscopic binary nature of the star produces unusual lattice-propagation conditions that Commission researchers have been studying for several decades.
Silence Topic
The system's fabrication guilds have been quietly negotiating a long-term component supply contract with a buyer whose identity has not been disclosed in any public filing. The scale of the contract — if the figures that have leaked to guild floor representatives are accurate — exceeds Tanegashima's current production capacity by a factor of three. No one knows who the buyer is, what the components are for, or where they will ultimately go. The guild leadership says it is commercially sensitive. The workers want to know whether they are building something they would want built.
Narrative Hook
Tanegashima makes things without asking what they are for, and has made enough money doing so that questioning the arrangement has become socially difficult.
Calibration Note
Wave_4 settlement at hop 3 reflects corporate-origin activation: the fabrication potential was identified late because early survey teams were looking for habitable worlds, not industrial sites. The east_reach heritage (Japanese founding wave) is an Early Arrival exception — a Syndic logistics executive routed the founding contract through her own cultural network, producing a Japanese-heritage founding community in the middle of the Commonwealth corridor. After four generations, the system is thoroughly cross-corridor: the founding heritage survives in naming conventions, some architectural vocabulary, and the guild governance model, but the population is demographically mixed.
