THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — TANEGASHIMA
TANEGASHIMA makes things without asking what they are for, and has made enough money doing so that questioning the arrangement has become socially difficult.
The Guilds
Governance here is an Assembly of Technical Delegates — representatives elected by professional guild rather than geography. Each licensed trade guild nominates candidates; all resident adults vote across guilds. The result looks like a meritocracy, debates endlessly in technical terms, and produces policy that reliably advantages the established guilds at the expense of newer arrivals. The Concord Assembly finds this arrangement procedurally confusing but does not object to it so long as assessments are paid on schedule, which they are.
The system's economic anchor is advanced fabrication. Wave 4 settlers brought manufacturing traditions and established the first modular shipyard in this band of the north corridor. Gate Corporation contracts for hull components and gate maintenance sub-assemblies have kept those yards viable for a century. The Japanese founding heritage survives in naming conventions and the guild governance model, but the population is demographically mixed after four generations.
The Contract
The fabrication guilds have been negotiating a long-term component supply contract with a buyer whose identity has not been disclosed in any public filing. The scale — if the figures that have leaked to guild floor representatives are accurate — exceeds Tanegashima's current production capacity by a factor of three. Nobody knows who the buyer is, what the components are for, or where they will ultimately go. The guild leadership says it is commercially sensitive. The workers want to know whether they are building something they would want built.
Practical Information
Tanegashima is three hops from Gateway with three gate apertures. The Commission has a small monitoring station here, less for enforcement than scientific interest — the spectroscopic binary star produces unusual lattice-propagation conditions. The food is imported. The fabrication yards are impressive. The questions about what they are fabricating are not encouraged.
