Randgebiet
GJ 349 | M-type | deep_frontier
The name means "border territory," which is accurate in the sense that this is approximately where organized space runs out. Randgebiet is forty to eighty years old — the newest community in the Germanic deep frontier chain, founded by second-generation settlers from Vorposten who decided one more hop was worth the effort. The community is still finding its institutional character. At this scale, individual personalities shape what a community becomes, and the community is small enough that the personalities here are still visible in the institutions they're building.

Supply Dependency
Randgebiet is not yet self-sufficient. The agricultural base is in its second or third generation of M-dwarf adaptation — viable, but not producing the surplus that older deep frontier systems have developed. The community imports food supplements and manufactured goods through Vorposten on a regular schedule. The supply line is the community's operational constraint; every significant decision factors in lead times.
Infrastructure is basic. Fabrication capacity covers the most common maintenance needs. Medical capability is limited to what the community's two trained practitioners can manage with available equipment. Complex interventions require travel to Vorposten or further inward. This is a known risk that the community has accepted and manages through preventive practice rather than emergency response.
Faction Notes
No external faction presence. Randgebiet is too new and too small to have attracted institutional attention of any kind. The Compact of Westphalia's affiliated communities are aware that second-generation settlers from Vorposten pushed the corridor further; the Compact's institutional framework does not extend this far out, but the cultural inheritance does. Randgebiet's governance instincts — mutual recognition, minimal external obligations, deliberate community compact — trace to that tradition without the community being formally a member of anything.
Silence Topic
What Randgebiet does not discuss: doubts about whether one more hop was the right choice.
The community was founded on confidence: second-generation settlers who knew the deep frontier because they grew up on it, who understood the costs, who chose to push further anyway. Not all of them have retained that confidence equally. The first years were harder than projected. The agricultural base took longer to establish. A medical emergency in the second year required evacuation to Vorposten that the community had not built infrastructure to handle smoothly. The founders talk about these things among themselves, at depth. They do not talk about them with outsiders, because the community's sense of identity is not yet durable enough to survive public doubt.
Narrative Hook
Randgebiet's founders chose to push the corridor one hop further than Vorposten and have spent the years since wondering, privately and without resolution, whether the confidence that drove that decision was wisdom or stubbornness.
