THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — RANDGEBIET
RANDGEBIET means "border territory," which is accurate in the sense that this is approximately where organized space runs out, and approximately where second-generation settlers from Vorposten decided that one more hop was worth the effort.
What One More Hop Costs
Wave-5 settlement, forty to eighty years old, hop 9. Randgebiet is young enough that the people who decided to push the corridor further are still present in the community. Young enough that the M-dwarf agricultural base is in its second or third generation of adaptation rather than its sixth or seventh. Young enough that individual personalities shape what the institutions are becoming, and the institutions are still becoming.
The first years were harder than projected. The agricultural base took longer to establish. A medical emergency in the second year required evacuation to Vorposten that the community had not built infrastructure to handle smoothly. The community has two trained medical practitioners, limited fabrication capacity, and a supply line to Vorposten that is the operational constraint on every significant decision. Complex medical interventions require travel inward. This is a known risk that the community manages through preventive practice, which works until it doesn't.
What the Founders Don't Say Out Loud
The community was founded on confidence. Second-generation settlers who grew up in the deep frontier, who understood the costs from childhood, who chose to push further anyway. Not all of them have retained that confidence equally. The doubt is present in conversations among founders, at depth, in the way that doubt presents itself in small communities at the edge — not as a single crisis but as an accumulating private question about whether the confidence that drove the decision was wisdom or stubbornness. The founders talk about this among themselves. They do not talk about it with outsiders, because the community's sense of identity is not yet durable enough to survive public doubt.
Second-generation frontier communities do not celebrate their founders' hesitations. They celebrate their founders' confidence. Randgebiet's founding narrative is about people who knew what they were doing and went further than anyone had gone before. This narrative is true. It is also incomplete.
Practical Information
Randgebiet is nine hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 146 and Vorposten. The community is not yet self-sufficient in food. Basic services are available. The governance instincts are Compact-derived without formal affiliation. Visitors should note that medical services are limited and that the community's hospitality, while genuine, is calibrated to a settlement still working out what it can sustain.
