Último Farol — "last lighthouse" in Portuguese — is named with the literalness that frontier communities tend to allow themselves. One gate. One connection, back toward GJ 211. Beyond the single aperture that links this system to the rest of the Reach, there is nothing settled, nothing mapped, nothing waiting. The community here is, in the most straightforward astronomical sense, at the edge. They know it and named the place accordingly.

The star is at the boundary of K and M classification — dim, red-shifted, producing the low-light environment that the Portuguese-heritage communities of this corridor have been engineering around for two hundred years. The habitable world requires supplemental lighting for optimal agriculture, as is common at this spectral type, and the community has refined those systems over two centuries to something close to second nature. What the low light lacks in photosynthetic efficiency, the long-term settlers compensate with careful planning.

The metaphor of the lighthouse is not purely poetic. A navigational beacon here — maintained by the community, registered with the Commission — is one of the furthest outposts in the deep_frontier navigation network. Vessels approaching from the GJ 211 direction use it as a reference point for the final approach. Vessels that are uncertain of their position after a difficult transit sometimes look for it specifically. Último Farol is the deepest supply terminus on its corridor arm. Everything that arrives here has come through GJ 211, which is itself distant from the main Reach infrastructure. The community has developed a strong culture of supply discipline — strategic reserves, careful tracking of consumption rates, and the kind of repair-first mentality that develops when replacements take months to arrive.

Faction Notes

A community council governs. The Commission post is staffed by a single long-term appointee who typically serves extended tours by choice — people who take postings this far out usually do so for specific reasons and tend to stay. No external commercial faction maintains a permanent presence.

Silence Topic

What lies beyond the aperture boundary — specifically, whether the corridor ending here was the result of survey findings that ruled out further extension, or the result of a deliberate decision to stop. Community oral history and the formal survey record give different accounts.

Narrative Hook

The Commission's annual visit, which has been reliably scheduled for the same month each year for the past two decades, did not arrive this cycle. The community council sent a query to GJ 211 six weeks ago. The reply, when it came, said only that the visit had been "deferred pending resource reallocation." Nobody has explained what resources were reallocated or why.
