THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 3403

GJ 3403 has been surveyed, found adequate, and left alone — a sentence that contains the entire history of the system, which is the kind of history that requires some discipline to write about at length.

The Positive Case and Why It Doesn't Win

The K-type primary is a better star than most at this depth. Warmer than an M-dwarf, more stable, producing something closer to what the human body expects from a sky. The primary world meets settlement criteria: breathable atmosphere, adequate warmth, reasonable water distribution, no significant geological instability. Survey assessments across multiple visits have reached the same conclusion each time.

The positive case for settling GJ 3403 — it is adequate — runs directly into the negative case for not settling GJ 3403 at hop ten: it is only adequate. Adequate at hop ten competes with adequate at hop six, and hop six is closer, and closer is usually the deciding factor when the qualities on offer are equivalent. The system has no mineral deposits that could attract extraction investment. No ecological richness that could attract research interest. No cultural or historical connection to an established corridor community that could anchor a founding cohort. It has a K-type primary and a through_route, and the corridor needed a node, and that is the whole of it.

What the Corridor Connects

GJ 3403 sits between Neugrund and GJ 656. Neugrund is the deliberately multi-heritage experiment — German, Portuguese, and Dutch families recruited specifically to build something that no single corridor's monoculture would have produced. GJ 656 is further out. The through_route that runs through GJ 3403 connects that experiment to whatever lies beyond it. The connection is a transit function. The habitable world turns below the corridor node, meeting its parameters, available.

Practical Information

GJ 3403 is ten hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Neugrund and GJ 656. The horizon station processes transit. The habitable world is uninhabited. The K-type primary performs its function competently. The surveys are on file and have not been revised since they first concluded that the system was adequate.

Adams of the Guide rates GJ 3403: Better star than average. No takers. Make of that what you will.
