Population

Supply Dependency

Shenwei's physical circumstances are unimpressive: a dim M-dwarf at 17.5 light years, no naturally habitable body, a subsurface ice-moon colony that has never grown beyond functional necessity. The system's early settlement dates from a moment when the wave_1 survey push was primarily scientific and logistical rather than commercial — Shenwei was placed because the survey teams needed a waystation with gate access between what was then the frontier and the newly charted systems deeper on the M-dwarf branch. It was never meant to become a permanent settlement. It became one because gate infrastructure, once built, tends to acquire populations.

The system imports nearly everything. Food, atmosphere processing components, manufacturing feedstock, medical supplies — all arrive via gate from Haodu or along the inner branch. What Shenwei exports in return is positional: it is the junction that connects the inner corridor to GJ 667C on one branch and to the systems behind Haodu on another. Remove Shenwei from the network and two corridor segments lose their connection. This structural necessity is the system's only real economic leverage, and local administrators have spent five hundred years being careful not to overuse it.

Faction Notes

The Assembly's relationship with Shenwei is the oldest in the mid-corridor and, paradoxically, among the most attenuated. Wave_1 systems were settled before the Assembly's governance frameworks had been fully standardized, and Shenwei's original administrative compact was never fully harmonized with subsequent Assembly procedural requirements. The system has operated under a legal status the Assembly describes as "charter-continuous" — meaning the original wave_1 administrative charter remains in force unless the system chooses to adopt a newer framework. Shenwei has not chosen. The wave_1 charter gives its elected administrative council more autonomous authority over gate scheduling and transit fees than any post-wave_2 Assembly framework would permit. The Assembly acknowledges this. It does not relish the precedent.

The research community that founded Shenwei has no institutional descendant — the original survey organization dissolved within two generations of the settlement's establishment — but its cultural legacy persists in the system's orientation toward technical and scientific work. Shenwei has a higher density of independent research contractors per capita than any comparable junction system. These are not affiliated with major institutions; they are individuals and small partnerships who came to a system with low overhead, existing infrastructure, and a governance structure that asks few questions, and built long-term careers at the edge of east_reach research networks. Silence Topic

The silence at Shenwei is about the original survey data.

Wave_1 survey missions generated comprehensive astronomical and geological records for every system they accessed. Those records were submitted to the Assembly Survey Archive and are, in principle, publicly accessible. What the original Shenwei mission team also generated — and what does not appear in the archived record — was an anomaly report filed as a classified appendix. The anomaly in question was geological, not astronomical: a formation in the subsurface structure of one of the outer bodies that the mission team's senior geologist described as inconsistent with natural formation processes. The report was classified at the mission director's discretion. The mission director died in wave_1. The classification has never been reviewed. No subsequent survey mission has revisited the specific body in question. Whether this is because nothing unusual was there, or because someone with access to the appendix decided it should remain quiet, is not a question Shenwei's current administrative council can answer.

Narrative Hook

Shenwei's wave_1 survey mission generated an anomaly report that has remained classified for five centuries, and the outer body it referenced has never been resurveyed.

Calibration Note

wave_1 at hop 5 is genuinely unusual — the overwhelming majority of wave_1 settlements are at hops 1-3. The correct explanation is that Shenwei was not settled in the conventional sense during wave_1 but rather established as a survey waystation when the east_reach branch was first charted. Survey infrastructure at this distance was rare but not unprecedented; the M4 star's gate horizon station was accessible from the inner branch before any commercial interest existed, and the survey program placed a minimal maintained station here to support further outward charting. The wave_1 designation reflects date of first permanent human occupation, not commercial development intention. The system has never grown to the scale that its settlement age would predict, which is itself a data point about what the wave_1 founders actually found here.
