GJ 3333 | K-type | west_reach
Groenland — Dutch for "green land," named with an irony its founders appreciated — is one of the few genuinely habitable worlds deep in the outer west corridor. Three hundred years of Dutch-heritage cooperative settlement under a K-type primary have produced something the Compact of Westphalia's negotiators have learned to cite carefully: a system that does not need the Assembly for anything and can demonstrate it. The green land is real. The independence it enables is real. The leverage this creates is not always comfortable for the people who hold it.

The K-type primary provides moderate but consistent stellar output, and the primary habitable world receives enough irradiance for open-field agriculture across its equatorial and sub-tropical zones. The world is neither warm nor cold — it is temperate in the specific sense of being within the comfortable range for human habitation without climate engineering across most of the surface. The Dutch founders who arrived in wave_3 named the world Groen and the system after it, borrowing the name from an Earth island whose connection to their heritage was oblique but emotionally legible: a place famously named for what it aspired to be rather than what it was.
Unlike the original Earth Greenland, the name proved accurate. Groen is green. The cultivated zones in the river basins between the mid-latitude highlands have been producing agricultural surplus for two hundred and fifty years. The founding families' descendants have diversified the cultivation base more times than the agricultural records track precisely, adapting to market demand as the Compact's mutual recognition network made the outer west's commercial geography more complex. Currently the primary exports are cold-climate grain varieties, protein crops adapted to the K-type light spectrum, and a preserved fruit product — a thick dried conserve — that commands premium pricing at corridor junctions as far inward as Hansestadt.
The system's spur_end topology connects it inward through Altmark (GJ 357) and outward to GJ 534, which is a stub. The commercial artery runs inward. The outward connection is a maintenance of the gate that existed before the stub was settled and provides theoretical continuity to a further outer territory that has not developed commercial significance.
Supply Dependency
Groenland is the rarest thing in the outer west: a system that does not depend on food imports. Agricultural self-sufficiency means the system's import requirements are confined to manufactured goods and technical equipment, categories where the cooperative's commercial surplus is sufficient to negotiate from a position of reasonable strength. The primary supply relationship runs through Altmark (GJ 357), whose five-gate commercial infrastructure provides access to a wider supply market than most outward corridor systems can access directly.

The founding covenant, still maintained as the council's governing document, describes the cooperative's purpose as the perpetuation of a specific set of community values rather than the perpetuation of any particular heritage. The values are practical: collective resource stewardship, transparent decision-making, individual rights constrained by community welfare. The document reads more like an engineering specification than a cultural manifesto, which the current council regards as its most important quality.
Three hundred years of continuous self-governance have produced institutional depth that younger Compact systems sometimes find intimidating. Groenland's council sends representatives to Compact governance discussions who arrive with complete historical records of prior analogous discussions, which is occasionally useful and occasionally tedious depending on which side of a debate the historical record favors.
Assembly authority is theoretical. No assessment has been levied in sixty years following the Compact signature, which removed the Assembly's practical enforcement mechanism by interposing the Compact's mutual recognition framework. The Assembly's trade delegate at Altmark (GJ 357) has visited Groenland twice in fourteen years; both visits were commercial in nature. The Assembly does not govern here and does not pretend to.
The Compact of Westphalia signature here was not ideological — it was practical. The founding cooperative's third-generation council calculated that the Compact's mutual recognition framework would reduce import costs by enough to make the agricultural surplus economically viable at the volume needed to sustain the cooperative's growth plan. What Groenland's cooperative council holds privately is a different kind of leverage question than the public Compact argument about food independence. Groenland has been quietly building reserve agricultural capacity in its southern highland zones for twenty years under a development charter framed as infrastructure expansion. The council knows — because Sonnwend's governor communicated it through Compact channels, not publicly — that Sonnwend's (GJ 320) surplus production is under pressure. If Sonnwend's surplus fails, the Compact's food independence argument collapses. Groenland's highland development is the contingency infrastructure. The council has not told the Compact's rotating council this is what it is. The development charter's public rationale is "long-term agricultural diversification." This is accurate in the narrowest sense.

The Dutch founding heritage maintained in governance philosophy rather than ethnic composition is internally consistent with three hundred years of population mixing while preserving institutional continuity. The name's ironic Greenland reference works as an in-universe choice that proved accurate.
