THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GROENLAND
GROENLAND is named for an Earth island famously described as greener than it was to encourage settlement — a reference the Dutch founders appreciated as ironic — except that in this case the name turned out to be accurate, which inverts the original joke entirely.
The Green Land
Groen is actually green. Open-field agriculture across equatorial and subtropical zones, river basin cultivation producing surplus for two hundred and fifty years, a dried conserve of preserved fruit that commands premium pricing as far inward as Hansestadt. The founding cooperative's third-generation council calculated that Compact of Westphalia membership would reduce import costs by enough to make the agricultural surplus economically viable at the volume needed for the cooperative's growth plan. The calculation was correct. Agricultural capacity is now approximately four times what it was before Compact membership.
Three hundred years of continuous self-governance under a founding covenant that describes the cooperative's purpose as the perpetuation of specific community values rather than specific heritage. The document reads more like an engineering specification than a cultural manifesto. The current council regards this as its most important quality. Groenland's representatives arrive at Compact governance discussions with complete historical records of all prior analogous discussions. This is occasionally useful and occasionally tedious, depending on which side of a debate the historical record favors, and they bring it regardless.
The Contingency
Groenland's council received information through Compact channels — not public channels — that Sonnwend's agricultural surplus is under pressure. The council has been building reserve agricultural capacity in its southern highland zones for twenty years, under a development charter framed as "long-term agricultural diversification." The charter description is accurate in the narrowest sense. The actual purpose is contingency infrastructure: if Sonnwend's surplus fails, the Compact's food independence argument collapses, and Groenland would be the only remaining system positioned to prevent that outcome.
The council has not informed the Compact's rotating council of this framing. The Compact council was informed of Sonnwend's situation in confidence. Sonnwend does not know anyone is preparing for its failure. The southern highland zones continue to develop.
Practical Information
Groenland is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Altmark and GJ 534. Assembly authority is theoretical — no assessment levied in sixty years. The dried conserve is genuinely worth carrying if you are transiting inward.
