THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ENTRONCAMENTO
ENTRONCAMENTO is a Portuguese railway term for the place where the lines cross, and the town of Entroncamento in Portugal was built because the network needed a node there, and the community grew around the railway yards, and the founders of this system understood they were making the same observation about their own situation.
The Junction
Three gates. Two productive spur communities on two of them, an unsettled dead-end on the third. Mwangaza's Mkeka weavers and Okahandja's cattle ranchers export through Entroncamento; their freight consolidates here, gets documented for onward routing to inner-ring markets, and moves inward through the corridor. The transit volume is not large by inner-ring standards. It is consistent, and the logistics infrastructure that has grown up around managing it employs a significant fraction of twelve thousand residents.
The founding heritage was mixed Mozambican and Namibian — families from the same wave 3 emigration pool that seeded Mwangaza and Okahandja, but with a logistics rather than production orientation. They came to run a junction. Three centuries of managing freight from Swahili-heritage weavers and Herero pastoralists have produced a community that is multilingual by necessity, pragmatic by disposition, and deeply knowledgeable about the commercial rhythms of the communities it connects. The Entroncamento Logistics Cooperative maintains the scheduling transparency that a junction community's position depends on. Its management rotates among the founding families' descendants, a convention that has produced institutional continuity and periodic complaints from newer residents about access to management positions.
The Third Gate
The gate to GJ 325B carries less traffic than the others but more than an empty dead-end system would typically justify. The transit logs show regular visits — not survey expeditions, which are infrequent and documented, but shorter transits by vessels declaring "maintenance and inspection" activities at the unsettled horizon station. The vessels are registered to entities that trace, through several layers of corporate registration, to inner-ring addresses. The GJ 325B Survey Consortium manages the scheduling for this gate and is not transparent about its membership or its decisions, and the settlement council has not required it to be. A junior logistics coordinator has noticed that vessels returning from GJ 325B consistently read heavier than their outbound mass — small amounts, within measurement tolerance individually, significant in aggregate across two years of transits, not appearing on any return manifest.
No one at Entroncamento has formally asked what maintenance activities require this frequency of visits to an empty system.
Practical Information
Entroncamento is six hops from Gateway with three gate apertures. The unresolved stellar type — catalog designation "m" — is a dim M-dwarf of ambiguous subclass. The rocky highland terrain with thin marginal soils means the community has never been a producing system and does not pretend otherwise. Food comes in from the inner corridor and from the spur communities it routes. The compliance records are maintained with the thoroughness of a junction that understands its position depends on being trusted.
