96 Piscium is the kind of name that survives by default — the catalog designation outlasting any attempt to replace it because no one has ever lived here long enough to care. The star is a K2V, warmer and more stable than the red dwarfs that characterize most of this region, with a habitable zone that would, under different circumstances, make it a reasonable candidate for settlement. Under actual circumstances, it is an unsettled loop member at hop 4, with two gates connecting it to GJ 1156 and GJ 388, and a permanent population that consists entirely of the operations staff the horizon station's maintenance systems require.
The loop exists in a navigational sense — 96 Piscium and its two neighbors form part of a circuit that allows vessels to route through the south_reach without backtracking. That functionality is real and regularly used. But the system itself has never attracted the community investment that produces settlement. Both neighboring systems are themselves minimally developed. The freight that passes through moves between them or toward more distant destinations; there is nothing at 96 Piscium that draws a vessel off its planned route. What the surveys did not resolve, and what subsequent investigation has not conclusively settled, is why the horizon station at 96 Piscium was built where it was, with the aperture configuration it has, rather than at a position that would more naturally connect to inner ring systems. The gates at 96 Piscium connect outward, not inward. Someone made that choice. The choice has consequences that look, in retrospect, like they might have been intended to keep the system isolated.

The question of why the horizon station's aperture configuration faces outward rather than inward — who made that choice, when, and whether it was the choice it appears to be — is not suppressed. It is simply not investigated, because there is no one here with the institutional interest or the mandate to investigate it. K2V at 24.3 ly is the farthest system in this batch by distance from Sol equivalent, and also the most "favorable" stellar type — which makes the non-settlement more notable.
