THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — 96 PISCIUM
96 PISCIUM has never been settled, which is remarkable mainly because it had every reasonable advantage and someone appears to have gone out of their way to ensure that didn't matter.
The Catalog Name
Catalog designations outlast place names only when no one ever cares enough to replace them. The star at GJ 33 is a K2V — warmer and more stable than the red dwarfs that define most of this stellar neighborhood, with a habitable zone that encompasses at least two candidate bodies and a relatively quiet chromosphere. Survey records from the early wave period described it as favorable. It is loop-connected at hop 4, meaning transit vessels can route through it without backtracking, meaning freight passes through regularly, meaning there is, in principle, enough foot traffic to sustain a community.
No one has settled. The transit staff rotate in and out on Assembly contracts and complete their assignments without extending voluntarily. They leave. The system remains unsettled. The K2V primary continues to quietly be a better star than most of its settled neighbors.
The Configuration
The gates at 96 Piscium face outward rather than inward. Someone chose that aperture configuration, at some point, when the horizon station was built. That choice has consequences: the loop connects outward, toward less-developed systems, rather than inward, toward the inner ring. Traffic that uses this loop is traffic moving deeper, not shallower. The system sits at the junction and routes it onward without capturing any of the economic value that a junction with better-oriented apertures would accumulate.
Who made the configuration choice, when, and whether it was intentional are questions the public record does not answer. There is no one here with the institutional interest to investigate, and researchers who have visited to look into it have left with more questions than they arrived with and nowhere in particular to raise them. The automated scheduling system at 96 Piscium has, separately and more recently, developed a habit of delaying outbound gate registrations by exactly eleven minutes, beginning from a specific calendar date that corresponds to no logged maintenance event. Whether this is related to anything else is unclear.
Practical Information
96 Piscium is four hops from Gateway with two gate apertures — a loop member. The operations staff are on rotation from the Assembly transit authority's regional support contract. They describe their posting with the dry humor of people who have learned to find an interesting day wherever they can find it. The habitable candidate bodies remain unsettled. The K2V primary continues to shine with unconsummated reasonableness.
