THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PURNIMA
PURNIMA is a tide-locked world at the end of a dead-end spur, where the light has been the same angle for four hundred million years and the settlers who arrived three hundred years ago found this beautiful and then found the geology underneath beautiful in a more commercially useful way.
The Terminator
The habitable zone is a band of perpetual twilight a few hundred kilometers wide at the planet's terminator line — the boundary between the hemisphere that bakes and the hemisphere that freezes, held in place by the orbital mechanics of a K5V star's gravitational lock. The light is permanent orange-rose, shallow and unchanging. Not sunrise, not sunset, but something that is both and neither, indefinitely. Residents describe it as beautiful without qualification. Visitors tend to agree and then find, after two or three days, that the unchanging quality becomes strange in ways they cannot fully explain.
The Bengali-Indian founding wave came because someone read far enough into the underlying assay tables to understand what "anomalous mineral richness in the twilight-band regolith" meant. Three pigment minerals in commercial concentrations, found nowhere else: an iron compound producing deep burnt-orange, stable without fixative; a manganese mineral producing a saturated violet of unusual depth; a calcium-bearing grey material that changes surface character before the color minerals are applied. The textile workers named them the sandhya dyes — twilight-hour in Bengali. Sandhya Red, Sandhya Violet, Sandhya Ash.
Textile specialists can identify a genuinely Purnima-dyed piece in comparative testing with consistent accuracy. Off-system attempts have produced close but not identical results. The bonding difference involves the trace mineral matrix of the regolith preparation process. The dye cooperatives have not disclosed it in full.
The Violet Reserve
The extraction quota system is set annually by the Dye Cooperative based on assay surveys conducted by the Cooperative's own technical staff. Independent geological assessment has not been conducted in over eighty years. At least two of the Cooperative's technical staff are aware of internal survey data suggesting that the Sandhya Violet concentrations in the primary extraction zone are materially thinner than the current quota model assumes — that the accessible reserves of the most valuable and expensive pigment are smaller than the public record shows.
The Cooperative's board has not been informed. The Terminator Council has not been informed. The quota continues. The Sandhya Violet continues to command premium pricing throughout the east_reach. The internal survey data remains internal.
Practical Information
Purnima is seven hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Novaya Zarya. The Terminator Council's sessions are remote-first by geographic necessity. The habitat clusters follow the twilight band. The farming terraces and the dye extraction sites want some of the same ground. The violet is the most expensive. The reserves are the most uncertain.
