THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 324A
GJ 324A has a functioning horizon station, a 180-year-old survey record, demonstrable habitability, and no one living in it — a combination that the deep frontier produces occasionally and that nobody has ever been able to explain entirely with the survey record alone.
The Survey
The survey record is accurate. The K-type star is adequate. The habitable world has marginal agricultural potential, which is a description that applies to many systems in the deep frontier that subsequently received founding cohorts willing to work with marginal. The horizon station was installed during the wave-3 corridor mapping. Its self-maintenance systems have been running without human intervention for long enough that no one alive remembers commissioning them. They continue to broadcast navigation data for transiting vessels, which is the station's function, and the function continues to be performed.
What the survey record explains is why GJ 324A was not anyone's first choice. It does not explain why, across three centuries of frontier expansion in all directions, it was never anyone's second choice either. Marginal agricultural potential has been accepted by founding cohorts with less in their favor, at greater distances, in more isolated topologies, with older survey data. The specific combination of factors at GJ 324A has consistently produced the same outcome: vessels transit through, note the system, and file nothing.
The Traffic Pattern
GJ 324A sits between Knotenpunkt and GJ 167. It sees occasional transit traffic: vessels that need the hop topology and nothing else. The horizon station services them automatically. Nobody stops longer than the transit requires.
Knotenpunkt's traffic analysts have been noting a significant decline in transit volume through the GJ 324A connection for the past three years. The reduction does not match the publicly available information about the economic activity along that corridor arm. The gap between what the numbers show and what they should show is the kind of gap that generates questions at junction cafeterias. No one has filed a formal inquiry.
Practical Information
GJ 324A is eight hops from Gateway. The horizon station is operational. The habitable world remains unoccupied. The Commission's records list it as surveyed and not under active review. The survey is 180 years old. No more recent survey has been commissioned, which means that if anything about the assessment was wrong — if something about the system was described accurately at the time and has since changed, or inaccurately at the time and never corrected — the records would not reflect it.
