Sonnwend

GJ 320 | K2V | west_reach

Sonnwend — German for "solstice," the turning point of the sun — is the agricultural heartland of the Compact of Westphalia's outer corridor territory. Its K2V primary is warmer than the red dwarfs that characterize most systems at this depth in the west, and the primary habitable world receives enough stellar energy to support open-field agriculture without permanent greenhouse enclosure. In a corridor where most inhabited worlds are either dim and cold or station-based altogether, Sonnwend's amber fields under a pale amber sky are something other systems notice. The Compact's food independence rests here more than anywhere else.

Population

The primary habitable world, called Wend by common usage and Neufeld in the founding charter, is a moderately sized rocky world with a thin but breathable nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere. The stellar irradiance from the K2V primary is sufficient for C3 photosynthesis in adapted cultivars, and the founding consortium brought seed stock specifically selected for the light and temperature profile the advance survey had predicted. The prediction was accurate. Within two generations, Wend was feeding itself without supplemental infrastructure, which was not common in the corridor's wave_3 expansion period.

The spur_end topology means Wend's two gates open inward: one toward Rana (GJ 150), the junction that connects this branch of the corridor toward Hansestadt and the core; one toward the outer continuation at GJ 798. This makes Sonnwend a passage in both directions but a terminal in the sense that no traffic continues further unless GJ 798 has a reason to receive it. The system is not on anyone's direct route to somewhere else significant. Visitors come because Sonnwend is their destination.

Supply Dependency

Sonnwend exports food — bulk grain, preserved root crops, dried protein legumes, and the cold-storage fresh produce that the Gate Corporation's ferry schedules permit. The inward route through Rana (GJ 150) carries these exports toward Hansestadt and the core; the Compact's internal distribution network directs them outward from there to the dim-star systems that cannot grow their own. Sonnwend's surplus feeds a population several times its own size across the outer corridor, which is the practical foundation of the leverage the Compact's negotiators invoke when Assembly trade delegates discuss the west_reach's integration status.

Imports are manufactured goods, technical components, and the specialty materials that agricultural systems need from industrial ones. These arrive primarily through Rana (GJ 150). The pricing through Rana is Assembly-influenced — Rana maintains commercial neutrality and prices accordingly — which means Sonnwend periodically investigates alternative routing through GJ 798, but the through-route at GJ 798 has not developed commercial infrastructure to the point where it offers better terms than Rana's established corridor.

MVG has no significant contract presence in Sonnwend. Agricultural output is outside MVG's corridor specialization in this region, and the founding cooperative's charter explicitly prohibited resource extraction contracts that would compete with agricultural land use — a provision that has been challenged three times and upheld three times by the charter council.

Faction Notes

Sonnwend's governance is an agricultural cooperative republic, one of the purer examples of that form in the outer west. Land is held cooperatively by founding-charter grants, with individual families holding cultivation rights that are heritable but not marketable outside the cooperative framework. Capital decisions are made by a sector council, and the system's executive function is a governor elected at five-year intervals. The current governor, Annelore Berghuis, is in her third term and holds a reputation among Compact planners as the most effective agricultural policy negotiator the outer corridor has produced in two generations.

The Compact of Westphalia is central to Sonnwend's governance identity. The system signed early, in the formation period, and its agricultural surplus was one of the practical arguments that convinced skeptical outer corridor systems that the Compact could provide real economic benefit rather than just political solidarity. Sonnwend's governor holds a permanent seat on the Compact's agriculture and supply coordination committee — an informal body without treaty standing but with genuine operational influence over how food moves through the mutual recognition network.

Assembly authority is nominal. Sonnwend pays its assessments, maintains commercial export registrations, and otherwise operates outside the Assembly framework entirely. The Assembly's west_reach agricultural survey, last updated fourteen years ago, describes Sonnwend's cooperative land structure as "non-standard but locally stable." This is the Assembly's way of noting something it has no plans to address.

Silence Topic

Sonnwend's position as the Compact's primary food-export system creates a dependency that the Compact's outer corridor members do not often discuss: if Sonnwend's agricultural output failed or was interrupted, the systems that depend on its exports would face genuine hardship within a single growing season. The cooperative council is aware of this and has been building strategic reserves for thirty years. What the reserves have revealed is that the K2V primary's output variability — a cycle of intensity fluctuation that the local agricultural science office characterizes as "within normal parameters but at the upper range of the expected distribution" — has been compressing growing season windows in the highland cultivation zones for the past two decades. Each year has still produced a surplus. The margins on that surplus are narrowing, and the reserves are compensating for shortfalls that have been growing larger without anyone outside the council's agricultural commission having been told.

Narrative Hook

The Compact's food independence depends on Sonnwend's surplus — and the agricultural council's internal projections show that surplus quietly shrinking against reserves that are covering the gap, while the outer corridor systems that depend on those exports plan around production figures the commission stopped believing four years ago.

Calibration Note

wave_3 at hop 7 with a spur_end topology is consistent with deliberate agricultural settlement following the discovery that this particular K2V star hosted a genuinely habitable world — wave_3 settlers followed the agricultural potential the survey identified. The K2V classification is accurate. spur_end with two gates is accurate to the profile: one connection inward through Rana, one outward to GJ 798. The German name "Sonnwend" communicates the agricultural-solar significance without being an Earth place-name.
