THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — VORPOSTEN
VORPOSTEN is the outpost, which is what the name says, which is accurate, and which does not require elaboration from a community that is still building its second-generation infrastructure and has not yet reached the point where elaboration feels appropriate.
Still Building
Wave_5 settlement, forty to one hundred years old, hop 8. The founding cohort came from Compact of Westphalia-affiliated systems and carried those political instincts with them: mutual recognition, minimal external obligations, the deliberate community compact as the basis for governance. The K-type star is adequate. The agricultural base is in its early generations of adaptation, producing enough to cover most local food requirements but not the surplus that older communities export. The Community imports food supplements, manufactured goods, and medical equipment through Weitblick on a regular schedule. Supply lead times govern most decisions.
The Compact's affiliated systems have provided settlement support — agricultural consultation, equipment loans, skilled labor for first-generation infrastructure. This support is understood by both sides as time-limited. Vorposten will be expected to become operationally independent within a generation. The community's leadership is building toward that expectation with the focus of people who know the transition is coming and prefer to manage it rather than be managed by it.
The Consultation Gap
The Compact of Westphalia's consensus processes are designed for communities with communication access measured in days. Vorposten's communication lag to the Compact's inner corridor systems is measured in weeks. Decisions that can't wait don't wait. The governance decisions the founding cohort has made without the consultation the Compact framework technically requires have been accumulating quietly since the settlement's second year.
Whether this is pragmatic adaptation to frontier conditions or the Compact framework simply not fitting a community of this size at this distance is a question the community hasn't resolved. The more relevant observation is that they have not raised the question with the Compact. The distance makes it easy to not raise. The Compact, operating on its own communication timescales, has not noticed the gap yet.
Practical Information
Vorposten is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Weitblick and Randgebiet. The Commission has a registration on file. No Commission personnel have visited. The community is small, functional, and building. The Compact's values are present in how the founding cohort talks about what they are doing. The Compact's procedural requirements are present in the community's compliance filings, which are careful, because this is the kind of thing that becomes a problem if neglected at the founding.
