THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — LICHTBRÜCKE
LICHTBRÜCKE means "light bridge" — a characterization the founding surveyor gave the K0V primary when arriving from the dimmer corridor behind it — and the name has settled into the place so completely that residents no longer notice the metaphor, which is how good names work.
The Function
Four hundred years of keeping a waypoint open. The community that the founding cooperative built here did not choose this system for its agricultural potential or its mineral wealth — it chose it because the gate connection existed and the habitable world was serviceable and someone needed to be here to handle the transit. Brücke, the primary world, produces enough food with a small surplus. The warehousing and bunkering infrastructure serves ships moving between Freiholt and Randsholm. The community has survived four centuries on transit margin and agricultural surplus, which is a sustainable model that requires no drama to sustain.
Randsholm arrived forty years ago, a Wave 5 founding that placed itself on Lichtbrücke's outward gate. The young system's import volume has been the busiest decade for Lichtbrücke's warehousing sector since founding. Randsholm depends on Lichtbrücke for commercial access to Freiholt and the inner corridor. Lichtbrücke depends on Randsholm to have commercial reasons for existing at all.
The Tariff Question
Randsholm has been building toward the question of whether it has the right to levy transit tariffs on traffic moving through its gates — a question the Compact's commercial framework does not cleanly answer. Lichtbrücke's council has been quietly advocating within Compact governance discussions for a resolution that keeps the route commercially fluid. The council has not stated this in terms that identify its own economic interest in Randsholm's governance rights remaining limited. The advocacy is framed as concern for corridor-wide commercial efficiency. This is a description that is technically accurate in the same way that most technically accurate descriptions are.
The four hundred years of institutional survival that the Lichtbrücke council is protecting are real. The community that built the waypoint and kept it open through four centuries of changes in the surrounding corridor has a genuine stake in the outcome. This does not change what it is doing. It does make it somewhat more understandable.
Practical Information
Lichtbrücke is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Randsholm and Freiholt. The Compact of Westphalia membership dates to the second generation of treaty formation. Assembly authority is theoretical. The bunkering and warehousing facilities are reliable.
