Overview

Dunmore Stillwater sits at the end of a single gate connection to Kelburn Crossing (GJ 216A), and the name describes both the place and the disposition. The primary body is cold, dim under its M4 star, and dominated by a network of shallow inland seas whose surfaces, on calm days, are so flat they reflect the rust-coloured sky without distortion. The founding cohort — Scottish-Australian in heritage, arriving 400 years ago in Wave 2 — looked at the water and named the system for it. They were not poetic people, but the stillness of the place invited a certain care in description.

The founding decision to settle a dead-end system was deliberate. The Dunmore party had spent three years at transit nodes before reaching this spur, and what they wanted was not a crossing point but a terminus. They were agricultural settlers — cooperative farming background, accustomed to collective decision-making and long planning horizons — and the inland seas offered something that transit systems could not: biological productivity. The shallow waters, warmed from below by mild geothermal activity and lit dimly from above by the M4 star, support a dense aquatic ecosystem of microbial mats and filamentous organisms that the founders spent two generations learning to cultivate.

Dunmore aquaculture is the system's reason for existing. The shallow-sea organism now commercially harvested — called dunmore kelp, though it is not kelp in any biological sense — grows in the upper metre of the water column and produces a protein-rich biomass that, when processed, yields a shelf-stable food supplement with an amino acid profile that complements the nutritional gaps common in dim-star agricultural systems. It does not taste good. It does not need to. What it does is keep people in outer north_reach systems from developing the protein deficiency syndromes that afflict populations dependent on narrow-spectrum cold-adapted crops.

Dunmore kelp supplement ships outward through Kelburn Crossing to systems as far as Ngata's Star (GJ 706) and inward toward the mid-reach. The volumes are modest — this is a dead-end system with limited harvesting capacity and a population of 3,000 — but the product fills a niche that no other outer north_reach system occupies. The shallow seas could theoretically support ten times the current harvest. They have not been scaled because the community has not chosen to scale them. The Dunmore cooperative operates at the capacity its members are willing to maintain, and its members are willing to maintain a capacity that lets them live quietly at the end of a single gate.

Four hundred years of dead-end isolation has produced a community that is remarkably self-contained. Dunmore Stillwater receives visitors — traders collecting kelp supplement shipments, occasional researchers studying the aquatic ecosystem, transit passengers who took the wrong gate and need to wait for the return schedule — but it does not seek them. The community's internal social life is dense and its external social life is perfunctory. Residents describe the stillwater personality as patient, which it is, and as incurious, which is less fair. They are curious about their own world. They are not curious about yours.


Supply Dependency

Dunmore Stillwater depends on Kelburn Crossing (GJ 216A) for all manufactured goods, medical supplies, and technical equipment. Food production is locally sufficient — the aquaculture and supplementary cold-crop agriculture cover nutritional needs — but the system imports fabricated materials it cannot produce at its scale. The supply relationship is uncomplicated: kelp supplement outbound, manufactured goods inbound, on a schedule dictated by the gate's transit frequency. The dead-end topology means a single gate disruption would isolate the system entirely, which the community mitigates through maintaining a 24-month stockpile of critical supplies — a practice established in the founding charter and never abandoned.


Faction Notes

The Dunmore Cooperative — the governing body, unchanged in basic structure since the founding. All permanent residents hold cooperative membership; governance decisions require supermajority consensus. The structure is slow and intentionally so. The current chair, Hamish Dunmore-Parata, is a seventh-generation descendant of the founding party and manages the cooperative with the unhurried competence that the community values above all other administrative qualities.

The Stillwater Research Station — a small biological research facility funded partly by Dunmore cooperative revenues and partly by external grants routed through academic institutions at Johannsen's Star. Studies the aquatic ecosystem that supports the kelp harvest. Has produced several significant papers on dim-star aquatic biology that are cited more widely than the station's two permanent researchers would expect. The station's work has occasionally attracted visiting scientists who find the quiet productive.

The shallow inland seas have been showing a gradual temperature increase over the past three decades — roughly 0.4 degrees across the monitoring period. The Stillwater Research Station's internal reports attribute this to a shift in the geothermal gradient beneath the primary harvesting beds. The kelp organism's productivity is temperature-sensitive; the optimal range is narrow. The station's modelling suggests that at current rates, the primary beds will exceed optimal temperature within 40 years, which would reduce yields significantly. The cooperative has not disclosed this to its trading partners. The kelp supplement's market position depends on reliability of supply, and announcing a potential future decline would invite competitors and reduce current contract prices.

Calibration Note

The header classification reads G-type; the READ-ONLY star data is M4, a dim red dwarf. The G-type header reflects the broader tier classification rather than the precise spectral type. The world described here — cold, dim, geothermally active shallow seas — is consistent with M4 stellar conditions. Wave_2 dead_end settlement at hop 5 is plausible for an agricultural cooperative that deliberately chose isolation.
