THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — DUNMORE STILLWATER

DUNMORE STILLWATER is named for the condition of its inland seas on calm days, which is a precise act of description by people who had decided that what the water did was more important than anything they had brought with them.

The Seas

The founding cohort — Scottish-Australian, arriving 400 years ago — had spent three years at transit nodes before reaching this spur. What they wanted was not a crossing point but a terminus. The shallow inland seas, warmed from below by mild geothermal activity and lit dimly from above by the M4 star, support a dense aquatic ecosystem of microbial mats and filamentous organisms that the founders spent two generations learning to cultivate. The organism they developed into a commercial product is called dunmore kelp, though it is not kelp in any biological sense. It grows in the upper metre of the water column, produces a protein-rich biomass, and when processed yields a shelf-stable food supplement with an amino acid profile that complements the nutritional gaps common in dim-star agricultural systems. It does not taste good. Its market is every outer system where people are slowly developing protein deficiency syndromes from narrow-spectrum cold-adapted crops, which is most of them.

The shallow seas could theoretically support ten times the current harvest. They have not been scaled because the community has not chosen to scale them. The Dunmore cooperative operates at the capacity its members are willing to maintain, which is the capacity that lets them live quietly at the end of a single gate. Visitors collecting kelp supplement shipments sometimes find this frustrating. The community is aware of this and has been patient about it for four hundred years.

The Temperature

The shallow seas have been showing a gradual temperature increase over the past three decades — roughly 0.4 degrees across the monitoring period. The Stillwater Research Station's internal reports attribute this to a shift in the geothermal gradient beneath the primary harvesting beds. The kelp organism's optimal temperature range is narrow. The station's modelling suggests that at current rates, the primary beds will exceed optimal temperature within 40 years, which would reduce yields significantly.

The cooperative has not disclosed this to its trading partners. The kelp supplement's market position depends on reliability of supply, and announcing a potential future decline would invite competitors and reduce current contract prices.

A nutritional science researcher from an inward system has arrived requesting access for independent sampling. Her published work suggests she is developing a synthetic alternative to dunmore kelp supplement. The cooperative cannot determine whether her visit is academic curiosity or industrial reconnaissance.

Practical Information

Dunmore Stillwater is five hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Kelburn Crossing. Single-aperture isolation is managed through a 24-month stockpile of critical supplies, established in the founding charter and never abandoned. The community is small, self-sufficient, and deeply indifferent to the broader Reach in the way of places that deliberately chose to be at the end of a single gate. Residents describe the personality as patient. The stillwater of the inland seas, on calm days, reflects the rust-colored sky without distortion.
