Population

Overview

The name is ironic, which is appropriate for a system settled by people who arrived expecting to study stellar flares and ended up farming mushrooms. Fenwick's Lantern sits at the end of a single gate from UV Ceti (GJ 65A), which means it is two hops beyond Wolf 359, at the end of a spur off a spur, connected to the broader reach by a chain of gates that passes through the most famous flare star in the catalog. Thomas Fenwick, who led the Wave 3 expedition that established the settlement, was an atmospheric physicist who had spent four years at the UV Ceti research station before deciding that what the station's supply chain needed was a local source of fresh food rather than another spectrograph.

The 'e' in the M4.5Ve classification denotes emission lines — this star flares, like its neighbour UV Ceti, though less dramatically and less frequently. The flare activity is enough to require radiation shielding on surface installations but not enough to demand the full hardened-bunker approach that UV Ceti requires. Fenwick's original assessment described GJ 285 as "UV Ceti's calmer sibling," and the comparison has held: the star is active, the radiation environment is manageable, and the settlement infrastructure splits the difference between surface exposure and full shelter.

What Fenwick found on the primary body justified his instinct about food production. The world is cold, dim, and geologically quiet — a stable surface under a restless star. The terrain is flat basalt plains interrupted by shallow crater formations, the remnants of an ancient impact history that left the surface pocked with depressions ranging from a few metres to several kilometres across. These craters, sheltered from surface winds and partially shielded from stellar radiation by their rim walls, turned out to be natural growing environments for subterranean and low-light agriculture.

The crater farms are Fenwick's Lantern's contribution to the outer north_reach. The primary crop is a suite of engineered fungal cultivars — descendants of Earth-origin mycological stock adapted over three centuries to the specific mineral profile of the basalt substrate and the dim, flare-punctuated light regime. The fungi grow in layered beds within the crater depressions, sheltered under lightweight radiation-shielding canopies. Production is modest by reach-wide standards but significant for the local supply chain: Fenwick's Lantern feeds UV Ceti's research station and provides supplementary food stocks to systems accessible through the Wolf 359 junction.

The community is small — roughly 1,200 permanent residents — and has the particular character that develops when a settlement is founded by scientists who became farmers. Technical literacy is high. Social pretension is low. The local culture values competence and deprecates complaint. When the star flares, the radiation monitors chirp, the canopies are checked, and work resumes. Fenwick himself died 240 years ago; his descendants still farm the original crater, which is called Fenwick Basin and produces the system's most consistently graded cultivar.


Supply Dependency

Fenwick's Lantern depends on UV Ceti (GJ 65A) for all manufactured goods and technical equipment, which UV Ceti in turn sources through Wolf 359. The supply chain is long and thin — three gate hops from any significant manufacturing base. The community mitigates this through aggressive local fabrication and repair, maintaining workshops that can produce basic tools, structural components, and agricultural equipment from local basalt-derived materials. Food flows in the opposite direction: Fenwick's Lantern exports fungal cultivar products to UV Ceti, which depends on them for a significant fraction of its fresh food supply. This mutual dependency — food outbound, equipment inbound — has been stable for 300 years.


Faction Notes

The Fenwick Basin Cooperative — the primary governance and agricultural body. Structured as a worker-owned cooperative with membership tied to active participation in crater farming. The cooperative manages land allocation, crop rotation schedules, and export logistics. Governance is by consensus at quarterly assemblies, with day-to-day operations delegated to a rotating administrator.

The Canopy Guild — an informal professional association of the engineers who maintain the radiation-shielding canopy systems. The canopies are the critical infrastructure: without them, flare events would sterilise the growing beds. The Guild's members are the most technically skilled residents and have a quiet authority that exceeds their formal governance role. When a Guild engineer says a canopy section needs replacement, it gets replaced.

ISPI Supply Office — the Interstellar Stellar Phenomena Institute maintains a small logistics office at Fenwick's Lantern, coordinating food shipments to the UV Ceti research station. The office has a single permanent staff member who also functions as Fenwick's Lantern's most reliable source of news from the broader reach, a role that is unofficial but widely valued.


Silence Topic

The flare frequency at GJ 285 has been increasing over the past two decades — a trend documented in the Canopy Guild's maintenance logs but not formally reported to the cooperative's general membership or to the ISPI supply office. The increase is statistically significant but not yet operationally critical; canopy replacement cycles have shortened from eight years to six. The Guild's senior engineers disagree about whether this represents a long-term trend or a cyclical variation, and they have chosen to resolve the disagreement internally before raising it publicly. In the meantime, the canopy materials budget has been quietly increased through a line item that the cooperative's general accounts describe as "infrastructure maintenance," which is technically accurate.
