THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — FENWICK'S LANTERN

FENWICK'S LANTERN is named after a man who came to study stellar flares and stayed to grow mushrooms, which is not the career trajectory atmospheric physics prepares you for but which turned out to be exactly what the outer north arc needed.

The Crater Farms

Thomas Fenwick spent four years at the UV Ceti research station before concluding that what the station's supply chain needed was not another spectrograph but a local source of fresh food. He went one gate further out, found an M4.5Ve flare star — calmer than UV Ceti, he wrote, though still active — and discovered that the primary body's shallow impact craters, sheltered from surface winds and partially shielded by their own rim walls, made natural growing environments for low-light agriculture.

Three hundred years later, the crater farms are the system's reason for existing. The primary crop is a suite of engineered fungal cultivars — descendants of Earth-origin mycological stock adapted over three centuries to basalt substrate and dim, flare-punctuated light. They grow in layered beds beneath lightweight radiation-shielding canopies. They do not taste good. They do not need to. What they do is provide a shelf-stable protein supplement with an amino acid profile that complements the nutritional gaps common in dim-star agricultural systems throughout the outer north arc. Fenwick's Lantern feeds UV Ceti's research station. It provides supplementary food stocks to systems accessible through Wolf 359. The supply chain is long and thin — three gate hops from any significant manufacturing base — and the community mitigates this through local fabrication and repair of nearly everything.

The Canopy Logs

The flare frequency at GJ 285 has been increasing over the past two decades. The Canopy Guild's maintenance logs document this clearly. The cooperative's general membership has not been informed. The canopy replacement cycle has shortened from eight years to six. The Guild's senior engineers are debating internally whether this represents a long-term trend or a cyclical variation, and they have chosen to resolve the disagreement before raising it publicly. The cooperative's accounts describe the increased canopy maintenance budget as "infrastructure maintenance," which is accurate in the most literal sense available.

A post-flare canopy inspection recently found organic residue on the underside of a shielding panel in an unplanted crater — biological material that did not come from any cultivated fungal stock and does not match anything in the system's biological survey records.

Practical Information

Fenwick's Lantern is five hops from Gateway at the end of a spur — one gate connecting to UV Ceti. Two hops from Wolf 359, at the end of a spur off a spur. The community numbers roughly 1,200 permanent residents. Technical literacy is high; social pretension is low. Fenwick Basin still produces the system's most consistently graded cultivar. Fenwick's descendants still farm it.

Adams of the Guide rates Fenwick's Lantern: Nutritious. Canopy Maintenance Ongoing.
