Travessia is a crossing. The name is Portuguese — travessia, the act of passage, the traverse, the place where you cross from one condition to another — and it was given by wave_4 settlers who arrived approximately 170 years ago and understood immediately that the system's value was positional rather than intrinsic.

The K5 primary is dim. The habitable zone is narrow and close. The single rocky world within it has a thin atmosphere, low surface water, and soil chemistry that wave_4 survey assessments described as "amendable with sustained biological investment over a twenty-year horizon." Twenty years of soil amendment before the first reliable harvest is a specific kind of promise: it tells you the place will work, eventually, if you are still here and still working. The settlers who named it Travessia were the kind of people who understood this and stayed anyway, because the alternative was that no one would be here and the corridor would have a gap.

The settlement is small — fewer than a thousand people, distributed between a primary habitation cluster near the gate approach and a series of outlying agricultural stations that are more accurately described as soil amendment projects in various stages of maturity. The oldest stations, established by the founding generation, now produce reliable crops. The newest, established within the last decade by the community's children and grandchildren, are still in the amendment phase. The pattern has repeated for 170 years: each generation pushes the cultivable area outward by a modest increment, and the community grows by the margin that increment provides.

Travessia's through-route topology connects GJ 875 to GJ 421B. The corridor runs deeper from here — past the through-route systems that carry what little traffic this section of the frontier produces, toward the unsettled gaps and the wave_2 anomaly at GJ 546. Travessia is the last settled system on this branch before the corridor enters a stretch where settlement becomes intermittent and then sparse. The community is aware of this. Their position at the edge of the settled corridor gives them a specific character: they are the people who provision the travelers going further, and the people who receive the travelers coming back. The coming-back is rarer than the going-further, and the community has learned not to ask about the difference.

The Portuguese heritage of the founding cohort connects Travessia to the south_reach's Iberian/Latin American cultural corridor, which at hop 15 is attenuated to the point of being genealogical rather than actively cultural. The community speaks standard Reach common with Portuguese loanwords in the agricultural vocabulary and the place names. The food culture retains recognizable south_reach characteristics — preserved fish preparations, grain-based staples, a fermented beverage made from a locally adapted grain that the community calls vinho de campo and that bears approximately the same relationship to actual wine that the community's soil bears to actual topsoil. It is an acquired taste. The community is aware of this and offers it to visitors without apology.

Governance by community assembly — the founding charter specifies direct democracy for all residents over fifteen years, a threshold that reflects the frontier's practical reality that anyone old enough to work the soil amendment stations is old enough to vote on what happens next. The Assembly is a name the community has heard of. It is not a body whose proceedings have affected anything Travessia has done or decided in 170 years.

What the travelers going deeper report when they come back — if they come back. Travessia is the last provisioning stop before the corridor enters the stretch toward Abzu and the unsettled systems beyond. Some of the traffic that passes through outbound does not return. The community does not track the difference formally. The provisioning logs record departures but not the inverse; there is no register of who came back and who did not. The community's practice of not asking is not indifference. It is the learned behavior of people who understand that the deep corridor beyond their position holds things that are not their business, and that knowing too much about a traveler's purpose makes the next traveler's arrival more complicated.
