Bout du Chemin

GJ 282A | G-type | west_reach

End of the road. For most of its four-hundred-year history, this is what Bout du Chemin literally was: the furthest settled point in the west_reach corridor, the place where the organized network ended and the uncharted horizon stations beyond had no human community waiting at the other end.

That changed within the last forty years, when the wave_5 settlers pushed through to Grenzstein (GJ 807) outward. Before that, Bout du Chemin had the particular psychological character of a frontier terminus — not just distant, but definitionally the last — and even now that it is no longer the end, the name persists and something of the feeling persists. The community built its identity around being the furthest, and you do not simply reconfigure that identity because the road extended.

The G-type star here is warm and generous. This is not an M-dwarf system with its narrow bands and red-tinted light; the primary world receives broad-spectrum illumination across a good-sized habitable zone, and the planet that occupies it has an ecology that looks almost familiar to settlers from Core and inner-corridor systems — blue-green, temperate, with weather patterns that move in comprehensible seasonal cycles. For French-speaking settlers who had been moving outward through increasingly dim and alien stellar environments, finding a G-type world at hop fifteen was something like confirmation that they had been right to come. The community that built here in the Wave 2 expansion was deeply committed to being here, and the quality of the world they found gave them reasons to stay that were not purely ideological.

The founding French families brought their language, their calendar awareness, their culinary particularity, and a form of political philosophy that privileges the commune over the administrative hierarchy. Bout du Chemin has always governed itself through genuine assembly — not a representative council in the Echternach mold, but actual community meetings for significant decisions, a practice that works at Bout du Chemin's scale and would be logistically impractical at any scale larger. The assembly structure is four hundred years old. It has been modified but not replaced. It is the thing that Bout du Chemin residents point to when they are asked what distinguishes their community from corridor settlements that share their linguistic heritage.

The economy is agricultural and small-scale manufacturing, with the transit service component that comes with any through-route position. The two apertures — connecting to Langemark (GJ 42) inward and now to Grenzstein (GJ 807) outward — process modest traffic volumes. The connection to Grenzstein is new enough that it has not yet fully integrated into Bout du Chemin's commercial patterns; the wave_5 settlers at Grenzstein are still establishing their economic footing, and the trade relationship between the two systems is still being defined. Bout du Chemin residents have mixed feelings about this, in the way that any community has mixed feelings about an event that changes its defining characteristic.

The horizon station has a slightly enlarged common area by corridor standards — not a deliberate design decision, but the accumulated result of a terminus community that treated transit arrivals as significant events. When you were the end of the line, every arrival was either someone who lived here or someone who had come to the end of something, and both deserved acknowledgment. The custom of making arrivals welcome persisted after the connection to Grenzstein made Bout du Chemin a through-route. The wave_5 settlers who passed through on their way outward remember it.

Supply Dependency

Bout du Chemin imports manufactured goods, medical hardware, and technical infrastructure components from Langemark and systems inward. The community is substantially self-sufficient in food and basic goods at its population scale, and the agricultural output provides some export capacity — primarily to Echternach, which has a more limited growing season, and to Grenzstein, which is still in its early settlement phase and imports most of its food. The Grenzstein food export relationship is new and significant: it represents Bout du Chemin transitioning from a terminus that received imports to a production system that is itself a supply base for something further out. The community is aware of the irony and is not entirely sure how it feels about it.

Faction Notes

No formal faction presence. The community assembly is the governance structure, and the assembly has no external affiliations beyond the standard Assembly registration and reporting requirements. The Commission is an abstraction at hop fifteen. The Veil Institute is a name in history texts about the horizon stations — the community's relationship to gate technology is operational and unsentimental. The GJ 282A horizon station is the infrastructure that makes Bout du Chemin part of the Reach, and it is maintained by the caretaker rotation system administered from Langemark, and it works, and that is the sum of the community's relationship with the Veil Institute's legacy.

The exception is a small community organization called Les Veilleurs — "The Watchers" — which has existed for about a hundred and fifty years and focuses on observational astronomy and the documentation of deep-corridor stellar phenomena. Les Veilleurs have no formal status, no political agenda, and no outside affiliations. They maintain a modest observatory on the primary world's high plateau and have been filing their observations in the community archive for a century and a half. Some of those observations concern the GJ 282A horizon station's operational characteristics during low-traffic periods. Those observations are in the archive and not highlighted.

Silence Topic

Les Veilleurs' observatory archive contains something the community has not formally processed: a set of horizon station observation records from approximately eighty years ago, collected during a period when the outward aperture was sealed pending corridor extension planning. During that period, when the outward aperture was officially inactive, the observatory recorded intermittent activation signatures — brief, low-amplitude, nothing like a full transit event, but consistent enough over eighteen months that the Veilleurs at the time flagged it in their archive as "aperture behavior inconsistent with sealed status." The transit authority reviewed it, found no corresponding traffic record, and classified it as instrument interference from the nearby power systems. The classification is in the official record. The original observatory data is in the community archive, separately, and has not been revisited.

Narrative Hook

The sealed outward aperture was showing activation signatures for eighteen months before the corridor extension was approved, and the explanation filed at the time required not examining the original data too carefully.

Calibration Note

G-type header per the database classification. The READ-ONLY profile shows K2V — a cool K-type, toward the lower end of the K range. This is consistent with a warm, habitable primary world but slightly cooler than a true G-type; the description in the text uses "G-type" in the colloquial sense that the community would use it (good, broad-spectrum light, familiar ecology) rather than a precise astronomical claim. Wave_2 at hop 15 is the furthest point of the west_reach Wave 2 push. Through-route topology with two apertures: Langemark inward, Grenzstein outward (the outward connection established within the last forty years by wave_5 settlement).
