THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — YEONGWOL

YEONGWOL is named after a Korean county historically known as somewhere travelers passed through on their way somewhere else, which the founders chose with a self-awareness that three hundred years of being exactly that have more than justified.

The Middle

Two apertures — one toward Miryang, one toward the deeper corridor — and a community organized around the fact of being between things. Yeongwol Orbital was designed for a community that would grow through transit rather than in-system expansion; the station is long, modular, and has been extended fourteen times in three centuries. The oldest sections are dimmer than the new ones, lit with the amber-shifted spectrum that early wave_3 installations used before the corridor standardized. Walking from the new berth extensions to the original hub is a short spatial journey and a moderately long temporal one.

The Yeongwol Passage Authority controls the processing time and inspection standards for everything that passes through, which makes it the governing body with the least glamorous mandate in the corridor and a genuine power base. Slow an outbound convoy by three days and someone notices. The Authority has spent three hundred years developing a precise understanding of exactly how long "someone notices" takes and calibrating its processing accordingly.

The Data Question

The Passage Authority maintains detailed logs of every transit through the system: cargo manifests, crew biometrics, declared route plans. Three centuries of through-route traffic. What the Authority does with that data — who has access, whether it is shared with Assembly Intelligence, whether it has been sold — is discussed in closed session and not published. Three separate Freedom of Transit Act petitions requesting access to the data governance policy have been filed in the past twenty years. All three are pending.

The Authority describes the data as operational records subject to commercial confidentiality. The petitioners describe it as transit records of corridor residents subject to public accountability. Neither description is wrong. The director-council has not resolved the question in twenty years of considering it, which the Transit Scholars — an academic community that studies traffic patterns and corridor sociology from the unique vantage Yeongwol provides — describe in their literature as a case study in institutional ambiguity about the boundary between a service body and a governing body.

The literature is respected in academic corridors and largely ignored by the systems it describes.

Practical Information

Yeongwol is six hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Miryang and Hạ Long. The flare-active M5Ve primary makes surface settlement inadvisable. The station food supply comes from Miryang's agricultural surplus. The Outer Trade Collective argues that the outbound processing infrastructure receives less investment than the inbound side. The Authority has acknowledged this and is considering it.

Adams of the Guide rates Yeongwol: Highly Informed. Data Policy Pending.
