jpmschweitzerandClaude Opus 4.6 cfd6ba973c fix(content): rename Vargr system to Sindri (GJ 3522)
Rename to avoid association with Traveller RPG species name.
GJ catalog ID unchanged. Updates system page, Drifter's Guide,
cross-references from Kensho and Renaissance, catalog, index,
and cultural migration design doc.

THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — RENAISSANCE

RENAISSANCE builds the gates. Not the alien ones — those were here before anyone arrived and nobody knows how to modify them. The human ones. The span gates that move freight between stations and planets, that make local commerce possible, that keep populations from being stranded on individual orbital platforms. The Gate Corporation built most of them. It built them here.

The Fabrication

The original fabrication halls are still standing. Nothing inside them is the same as what was there two centuries ago, which is how manufacturing infrastructure ages — the buildings are permanent and everything they contain is temporary, including the workforce, including the processes, including the understanding of what the processes actually do.

Certain classes of fabrication process at the primary production facilities are administered under protocols the workers are not trained on. The technical documentation for those protocols does not circulate in the standard engineering register. Workers who have asked about the restricted sections have been given explanations involving proprietary manufacturing security. This is a plausible reason. It is also exactly the answer the Corporation would give if the reason were something else.

The question matters because the answer would reveal whether every span gate the Corporation installs is purely human engineering or whether the Veil Institute's involvement means each one carries something of the alien technology's operational characteristics — characteristics the Institute understands and the Corporation's workforce does not.

Labor

The technical workers have three centuries of compound expertise and they know exactly how irreplaceable they are. They do not strike — striking would mean gate component deliveries failing, which would trigger Commission sanctions that fall on the Corporation, which resolves them through concession. The workers understand this mechanism. The Corporation understands that the workers understand it. The negotiations are long and specific and they usually produce outcomes unavailable to a workforce without that leverage.

The Corporation's senior management does not live in Renaissance. They live on Arbour, one hop away. They visit for inspection cycles. The workforce maintains its own view of this arrangement.

Practical Information

Renaissance is two hops from Gateway with five gate apertures — a hub connecting to ACB, Parallax, Sindri, Arbour, and Aurelius. The system has the flat industrial character of a place that knows what it is for. The residential infrastructure is functional and not ornamented. The contrast with Arbour, one hop away, is not remarked upon in official system profiles. It is understood.

Adams of the Guide rates Renaissance: Essential. Underpaid.
