THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CARRINGTON'S POST

CARRINGTON'S POST is where you find the part that Gate Corp no longer makes and officially does not have, staffed by engineers who know where everything is and why nothing should be thrown away.

The Depot

Edna Carrington spent three decades at the Fremantle maintenance academy before taking a forward deployment contract to establish a supply depot at this K3V spur end. She was supposed to stock it with current-specification components. She also stocked it with everything Fremantle had phased out as equipment generations turned over — the legacy maintenance tools and replacement parts that the academy had declared surplus because it had moved on to newer specifications. A working engineer's instinct for what gets discarded too quickly.

That instinct was correct in ways that outlasted her. Two hundred years later, the Carrington Depot is the primary secondary market for decommissioned gate maintenance equipment across the outer north arc. Engineers who need a component Gate Corp no longer manufactures know where to look. Operators maintaining horizon station infrastructure built to older specifications — and there are more of them than the academy's current curriculum acknowledges — route their sourcing requests here. The warehouses cover three square kilometers of flat eastern plain, catalogued and indexed.

Gate Corp officially acknowledges Carrington's Post as a legacy supplier. It maintains formal distance from the secondary market operations, which exist partly because Gate Corp's own procurement policies created the surplus. The liaison office's staff spend considerable effort managing this tension between official disinterest and actual dependence.

How the Inventory Was Acquired

A significant portion of the Depot's holdings was acquired in ways that Gate Corp's surplus disposal policies did not entirely sanction. Edna Carrington and her successors maintained informal purchasing relationships with individual Gate Corp engineers who removed equipment from active service slightly ahead of official decommissioning schedules. The practice has been grandfathered into organizational habit. Gate Corp's liaison office knows. No formal inquiry has ever been completed.

An engineer recently arrived with a request for a component from a horizon station maintenance kit of a vintage that should not exist in the outer north arc — suggesting either that someone has been running maintenance on an unregistered station, or that something with the wrong serial numbers has been traveling under cover of the secondary market.

Practical Information

Carrington's Post is five hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Fremantle and GJ 588. The community is unusually cosmopolitan for a spur end — engineers arrive from across the corridor, spend time, some stay. The Technicians' Fellowship maintains an informal apprenticeship system that the Fremantle academy has repeatedly attempted to formalize and the Fellowship has consistently declined. The Carrington Cooperative, now in its fifth generation of family leadership, manages pricing and the political relationship with Gate Corp.

If the part exists anywhere in the outer north arc, it is probably here.

Adams of the Guide rates Carrington's Post: Indispensable. Procurement History Irregular.
