THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — LEVERAGE
LEVERAGE is a commercial station at the Reach's capital. The Syndic combines named it. This tells you everything and nothing simultaneously, which is the combine aesthetic when it comes to naming their infrastructure.
The Name
Three hundred years ago, the combines that had been moving Sirius's food imports since before independence were invited by the founding Assembly to establish permanent commercial infrastructure in the system. The combines built a station. They named it Leverage. The Assembly, whose food imports were being managed by the people who built the station, accepted this naming choice without objecting in any documentation the Commission's archivists have been able to locate.
Three hundred million people now live on a station named for the structural advantage one holds over the people one is negotiating with. Whether this represents a three-century exercise in institutional candor or the specific sense of humor that develops in commercial operations that have been winning negotiations for long enough to feel secure about it depends on whom you ask. Sirius residents tend to view it as the former. The Assembly's liaison offices do not comment.
The Capital's Commercial Core
Leverage is where the business of being at the Reach's capital actually happens. Not the formal deliberative business — that is at Edict. Not the transit processing — that is at Aperture. The commercial business: the Syndic delegations, the lobbying operations, the legal counsel networks, the institutional hospitality infrastructure that every major Reach combine maintains at the capital because Assembly-adjacent commercial activity requires access to people who are having lunch somewhere near a decision-making process.
The combine ecology on Leverage is unusual in the specific way the system-level notes describe: Earth-originating Syndics with old institutional connections operate alongside purely Reach-internal combines that regard Earth-trading operations with the specific wariness of people who have benefited enormously from independence and would prefer not to examine that benefit too closely. They coexist on shared commercial infrastructure because this is the capital and everyone must do business here, which they manage with the professional warmth of people who understand that the alternative is worse.
Practical Information
Leverage is dockable at major capacity. The commercial district is extensive — three hundred million people generate significant service economy density. Representation from most major combines is present somewhere on the station; finding the right office requires knowing the combine's district convention, which is not publicly listed but is consistently reported in the broker community.
The station's governance registry lists it as private commercial infrastructure operating under Syndic administrative frameworks and Commission licensing. It is, in practice, partially independent of both Edict's civic authority and Aperture's Commission jurisdiction, which is precisely the arrangement the combines that built it wanted and that the founding Assembly decided not to litigate.
