Carvalhais is a village name. In the Portuguese of its founders, it means a grove of oak trees — carvalho being the oak, the suffix marking a place defined by them. The wave_3 settlers who chose the name had not seen an oak tree in their lifetimes; their parents and grandparents had left Earth generations before. They carried the name as a kind of inheritance, a word that preserved the shape of a place they had never been. There are communities in the south_reach that name themselves for what they intend to become. Carvalhais named itself for what its founders remembered someone else once had.

It is a junction of three gates: one to Lalande, one to Confluência, and one to GJ 785. The first two connections make Carvalhais structurally important in a way that its modest scale would not otherwise suggest. Lalande is the hop-3 inner anchor; Confluência is the six-gate hub that anchors the south inner ring's outer arc. The shortest path between those two major nodes runs through Carvalhais. Every freight manifest that moves between Lalande and Confluência — and that is a very great deal of freight — touches Carvalhais gate infrastructure. The junction has been a through-route for approximately two hundred and fifty of its three hundred years of settled existence.

The M4.5Ve primary is a mid-range late M-dwarf with active flare designation — not extreme, but requiring the standard hardened infrastructure protocols that are common throughout this region of the south_reach. The community lives primarily in station habitats close-in to the horizon station network, with surface installations on the largest rocky body serving agricultural and light manufacturing purposes. The architecture has the compact, reinforced quality of communities built by people who had already learned from others' flare-weather experience.

The community is small for a junction of this importance — perhaps forty thousand registered residents, with a transient population running at three or four times that in the transit hubs at any given moment. The permanent residents have developed a characteristic equanimity about being a through-route: they benefit economically from the traffic, they do not particularly need to be loved by the people passing through, and they have three hundred years of experience managing the relationship between a compact local community and an enormous transient throughput. The municipal governance structure — a rotating council of neighborhood representatives, elected annually — handles civic matters with a calm efficiency that visitors sometimes mistake for indifference.

The third gate, to GJ 785, is the community's less-discussed asset. GJ 785 is a dead-end; traffic to and from it passes exclusively through Carvalhais. What GJ 785 produces and what it needs in return is not publicly discussed in detail, but the freight volume is notable for a dead-end, and the scheduling for that gate is handled by a separate logistics cooperative that operates somewhat apart from the main transit apparatus.

Supply Dependency

Carvalhais imports most of its food from Confluência and refined technical components from Lalande. Its primary economic output is transit services and the logistics coordination that its through-route position demands. The junction status means the community does not need to produce very much else — transit fees and gate service contracts sustain the system. The GJ 785 logistics cooperative represents a secondary and somewhat opaque revenue stream.

Faction Notes

The Junction Logistics Cooperative manages the day-to-day operations of all three gates and employs a significant fraction of the working population. It operates with unusual structural transparency for its industry — gate schedules are published, manifest records are kept in a public registry, and the cooperative's finances are subject to annual community audit. This is the heritage of the founding Portuguese cooperative model intersecting with the practical reality that being a through-route means you cannot afford to be seen as untrustworthy.

The GJ 785 Logistics Syndicate is a separate entity that manages the dead-end gate exclusively. It is registered at Carvalhais but its principals are not all community residents. It publishes far less information than the Junction Cooperative and has declined, repeatedly, invitations to join the main community audit structure. The council has not pressed the issue.

Silence Topic

The community does not discuss what moves through the GJ 785 gate. This is not a formal silence — no agreement was ever written — but three hundred years of practice have made it habitual. Residents who work at the main transit hub do not ask their colleagues at the GJ 785 Syndicate about their manifests, and their colleagues do not volunteer. The Assembly compliance office has standard declared-manifest oversight authority at all gates; the GJ 785 manifests have always passed inspection.

Narrative Hook

A retired gate technician at Carvalhais has told her granddaughter that in forty years of working the GJ 785 gate, she saw the same freight container — identified by a specific registration mark she can still recite — pass through the gate in both directions on seventeen separate occasions, each time listed under a different shipper.

Calibration Note

M4.5Ve — mid-range late M-dwarf with active flare designation. The "e" emission classification reflects standard flare activity requiring hardened infrastructure but not the extreme protocols of M6+ systems. The junction topology connecting the two largest nodes in the south inner ring (Lalande and Confluência) justifies the community's economic stability despite its small permanent population.
