THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CARVALHAIS
CARVALHAIS was named for an oak grove by people who had never seen an oak tree, after a village none of them had visited, in a place none of their parents had lived, and this is considered entirely unremarkable.
The Through-Route
Three gates, two of which are the most valuable gates in the south inner ring. Lalande is the hop-3 inner anchor. Confluência is the six-gate hub that defines the south's outer arc. The shortest path between them runs through Carvalhais. This is not an accident — wave 3 founders who chose a junction between two major nodes understood what they were acquiring. What they may not have fully anticipated is how little this centrality would require them to be important in any other way.
Forty thousand permanent residents. A transient population running at three or four times that in the transit hubs. Three hundred years of through-route traffic. The permanent community has developed, in that time, a characteristic equanimity about being a place that people pass through on their way somewhere else: they benefit economically, they do not particularly need the travelers' attention, and they have long since stopped expecting anyone to arrive at Carvalhais as a destination. The Junction Logistics Cooperative that runs the main gates publishes its schedules, maintains a public manifest registry, and submits to annual community audit, because three hundred years on a major through-route has produced an intuitive understanding that transit business requires institutional trust to function.
The Third Gate
The third gate, to GJ 785, is the community's less-discussed asset. GJ 785 is a dead end; traffic to and from it passes exclusively through Carvalhais. The freight volume through this gate is notable for a dead-end. The GJ 785 Logistics Syndicate that manages it operates separately from the main Junction Cooperative, publishes considerably less information, and has declined invitations to join the community audit structure. The council has not pressed the issue.
A retired gate technician spent forty years working the GJ 785 gate. She has told her granddaughter that in those forty years she saw the same freight container — identifiable by a registration mark she can still recite — pass through in both directions on seventeen separate occasions, each time listed under a different shipper. She does not know what to make of this. Neither does her granddaughter.
Assembly compliance authority covers all declared manifests at all gates. The GJ 785 manifests have always passed inspection.
Practical Information
Carvalhais is four hops from Gateway with three gate apertures — junction connecting Lalande, Confluência, and GJ 785. The M4.5Ve primary has the active flare designation that requires hardened infrastructure throughout this region; the community built to standard without complaint. Food comes in from Confluência. Technical components come in through Lalande. The transit fees sustain the rest. The community's founding Portuguese cooperative heritage is visible in the governance structure, the naming conventions, and the Junction Cooperative's commitment to structural transparency, which is the real inheritance.
