THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — THORVALDSEN'S CIRCUIT
THORVALDSEN'S CIRCUIT is named for a geologist who surveyed it four hundred years ago, which is fitting because the system has spent those four centuries doing what geologists do: looking at what's there, working out what it means, and revising the conclusions when the data changes.
Three Reinventions
The G5V primary provides light that the corridor's red dwarf systems do not. The primary habitable world has mineral deposits in its inner continental shelves that the founding Wave 2 consortium mined for two centuries. The seams ran deeper than expected. Then they ran out.
The first reinvention converted the exhausted mining infrastructure into heavy ore refinery capacity, importing raw ore from newer extraction systems further out and processing it for export. This worked for a hundred and fifty years before the cost structure of long-haul raw ore import made the margins too thin. The second reinvention began fifty years ago: Thorvaldsen's Circuit now trains the mining and extraction engineers who staff the outer corridor's still-productive systems. The system that used to mine teaches mining. This is not ironic; it is the kind of institutional adaptation that happens when a community with good conditions and long institutional memory applies both to finding what it can actually do.
The third reinvention is underway and still being argued about in the cooperative council, where three blocs — education, remnant refinery, and residential services — have been failing to agree on the refinery's capital situation for seven years. The refinery's three major processing units are nearing end-of-certified-life. The replacement capital requirement exceeds what the cooperative holds. The council is very good at negotiating between competing interests and very slow at making decisions that require one bloc to absorb costs for another's benefit.
The Admissions Question
The technical education institution's advanced extraction program has approximately one in five students enrolled under sponsoring entities traceable to operators in the middle reach whose labor practices and environmental compliance are below any standard the system's founding documents would endorse. The admissions committee knows this. The curriculum does not differentiate by employer. The ethics ombudsman has informed the council twice. The council has been reviewing the admissions policy for eleven years.
The institution's Compact of Westphalia institutional recognition accounts for roughly sixty percent of enrollment. Without it, the institution would face Assembly accreditation requirements its governance structure was designed to avoid. These facts coexist.
Practical Information
Thorvaldsen's Circuit is seven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 542 and Rødvik. The food is good. The mining engineering graduates are excellent. What they do after graduation is, according to the admissions committee, not formally within the curriculum's scope.
