THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KELBURN CROSSING
KELBURN CROSSING is named after a cable car route in Wellington, by a founder who apparently decided that a crossing point deserves to be named after a crossing point, which is more self-aware than most system names and has held up remarkably well for four hundred years.
The Through-Route
Aroha Kelburn-Singh called it a private joke. The community she founded has been making the joke since Wave 2, which has given it the quality of something that stopped being a joke and became a tradition around the third generation.
The F7V star burns warm and steady, producing a primary world with long days and a quality of light that settlers found generous after the dim red systems that dominate this arc. The terrain is scrubland — thin-soiled, wind-persistent, vegetation growing low in dense mats that turn bronze in the long summer. Visitors from inward systems find it stark. People who live here find it legible. The community is small, competent, and accustomed to strangers in the way of a place that has been the through-route between the mid-reach and the outer cultural fringe for four centuries. Everything moving between Dunmore Stillwater inward and Ngata's Star outward passes through here. Kelburn Crossing absorbs this traffic without absorbing its urgency. It remains unhurried despite being, technically, on the way to somewhere.
The Gate Closures
The through-route gate has experienced three unscheduled maintenance closures in the past decade — brief, each under 72 hours, each officially attributed to routine infrastructure adjustment. The Crossing Authority's private records indicate that at least one closure was initiated by Gate Corp without prior notification to local governance, described as "network-level calibration" and not further explained. The Authority has not raised this publicly because Kelburn Crossing's entire economic viability depends on the gate remaining open and reliable, and drawing attention to closures risks undermining confidence in the route.
A recent cargo manifest lists a consignment bound for Ngata's Star with a declared value exceeding the jade trade's entire annual volume. The shipper's registration traces to a holding company with no other commercial activity in the outer north arc.
Practical Information
Kelburn Crossing is six hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Dunmore Stillwater and Ngata's Star. New Zealand and Indian heritage in the founding layer, four centuries of transit-worker immigration layered over it, and a local dialect with Maori and Hindi loanwords that developed in the gap between them. The Kelburn-Singh Foundation maintains a small archive and runs the annual Crossing Festival, which draws visitors from adjacent systems and is the only significant cultural event in a community that otherwise defines itself by reliable throughput.
