Encruzilhada
GJ 211 | M-type | deep_frontier
The name means "crossroads," and it was chosen deliberately by people who had experienced what it means to have only one way out. Two hundred years ago, a Gate Silence event at a system further inward went dark for years. When the gate reopened, the survivors among the people who had been cut off had made a decision: never again a single gate. They searched the corridor for a through_route system, found GJ 211, and named it for what they needed it to be. The through_route topology here is not a geographical accident. It was the founding requirement.

Supply Dependency
Encruzilhada is agricultural in character — Portuguese-heritage M-dwarf farming of the type common to the south corridor, established over two centuries and now stable. The community exports modest surplus toward the inner corridor. The supply dependency is standard for a deep frontier agricultural community: manufactured goods and medical equipment come in through GJ 117 and the inner south reach.
What is not standard is the infrastructure investment pattern. Encruzilhada spends a disproportionate share of its annual budget on gate-adjacent maintenance and contingency preparedness relative to its size. The community does not maintain a full supply reserve against multi-year gate disruption — it is not large enough to sustain that — but it maintains something closer to that scale than most comparable communities, and the maintenance budget for both gate connections combined exceeds what the Commission's standard guidelines would prescribe for a system of this population.
Faction Notes
No external faction has a permanent presence at Encruzilhada. The community's political orientation is strongly autonomist, shaped by the founding experience of being cut off by an infrastructure event and having no recourse. The distrust is not of any particular institution — it is of single points of failure in general, which extends to institutional dependency as much as infrastructural dependency.
The Lattice Commission interacts with Encruzilhada primarily through infrastructure inspection records. The community is an attentive compliance reporter on anything related to gate maintenance and a disinterested one on most other regulatory topics. Commission agents have described Encruzilhada's gate maintenance documentation as the most thorough in their territory. The community files these reports because documentation of gate function is a value in itself, not because they trust the Commission to act on it.
Silence Topic
What Encruzilhada does not discuss: the specific circumstances of the Gate Silence event at the origin system, and what happened during the years the gate was dark.
The founding cohort lived through it. Some of them survived it and came here. They spoke about it to their children in the generation immediately following, enough to pass on the foundational lesson — never one gate. What they did not pass on fully, or passed on in fragments that have been processed into narrative rather than history, is the texture of what those years were actually like. How decisions were made when rescue was not coming. What the community did to survive and who it became in the process. The founding trauma is present in every institutional reflex Encruzilhada has. Its specific content is no longer accessible, which may be the point. Some things are better remembered as lessons than as events.
Narrative Hook
Encruzilhada was founded by survivors of a Gate Silence event who chose their location for its through_route topology; the specific events of the years their origin system was cut off are no longer remembered in detail, but every institutional decision the community makes reflects them.
