THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ENCRUZILHADA
ENCRUZILHADA means "crossroads," and the founders chose it knowing exactly what they needed it to mean: they had lived through having only one way out, and they had decided that would never happen again.
The Founding Logic
Two hundred years ago, a Gate Silence event at a system further inward went dark for years. When the gate reopened, the survivors among the people who had been trapped came here with a specific requirement: a through_route system. Not a dead-end. Not a spur. A crossroads, with two gates, so that if one went dark the other remained. They found GJ 211, named it for what they needed it to be, and built a community whose every institutional reflex reflects the knowledge of what single-point failure costs.
The infrastructure investment pattern is visible. Encruzilhada spends a disproportionate share of its annual budget on gate-adjacent maintenance and contingency preparedness relative to its size. The maintenance documentation for both gate connections is, per Commission agents who have reviewed it, the most thorough in their territory. The community files these reports because documentation of gate function is a value in itself, not because they trust the Commission to act on it. The distinction matters to the people making the distinction.
What the Years Cost
The founding cohort lived through the Gate Silence event. Some of them survived it and came here. They spoke about it to their children — enough to pass on the foundational lesson, the thing that needed to survive: never one gate. What they did not pass on fully, or passed on in fragments that subsequent generations have processed into narrative rather than history, is what those years of isolation were actually like. How decisions were made when rescue was not coming. What the community did to survive and who it became in the process.
The founding trauma is present in every institutional reflex Encruzilhada has. Its specific content is no longer accessible in detail. This may be the point. Some things are better remembered as lessons than as events — a principle that the community has absorbed so thoroughly that it no longer consciously applies it.
Agricultural Standard
Two centuries of Portuguese-heritage M-dwarf farming, stable and competent. Modest surplus exported toward the inner corridor. Standard supply dependency for manufactured goods and medical equipment. The community is functional and self-sufficient in food; nothing about the agricultural program is unusual. The unusual things are all in the infrastructure budget and the governance instincts.
Practical Information
Encruzilhada is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 117 and Último Farol. Transit vessels pass through; the through_route topology makes Encruzilhada useful as a waypoint for the south corridor's deep frontier traffic. The Commission interacts primarily through infrastructure inspection records, which are thorough. The community is politically autonomist and practically functional. Both gates are well maintained. This is not incidental.
