THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — NASCENTE
NASCENTE means "spring" — the place where water rises from the ground, the origin point — and four hundred years of unbroken settlement have given the name a weight that the founders could only have hoped for when they chose it.
The Age
Wave 2 at hop 6 means Nascente was a frontier system four centuries ago and has been accumulating history ever since. The infrastructure was laid when the Reach was expanding confidently, before Secession reshaped priorities and pulled resources inward. The main transit hub has a wing built to accommodate traffic volumes that never materialized. It is used for storage now. The wing is not a failure — it is evidence that the founding generation thought they were building something that would need more capacity than it ultimately needed, which is the kind of optimistic miscalculation that produces excellent bones.
Four hundred years gives a community weight without necessarily giving it wealth. Nascente's civic institutions, its dispute-resolution traditions, its agricultural calendar — these have been worked out and reworked a dozen times. The current arrangements are not perfect but they are deeply embedded, which is the quality you cannot buy and cannot rush.
The Commission and the Irmandade
The Commission has maintained a continuous post here for over three centuries, which is unusual for hop 6 and reflects the relationship predating the current authority framework. Nascente does not resist the Commission presence; the relationship is older than the instinct to resist. The Irmandade do Alcance — a Portuguese-heritage mutual aid society that predates the Commission post by a generation — handles private dispute mediation and maintains a community archive, overlapping occasionally with Commission functions. The overlap is managed with the practiced care of institutions that have been working around each other for two centuries.
The Irmandade's archive is the most complete record of south Reach corridor history in this region of the Reach. Its oldest sections, from the first century of settlement, have been sealed against outside access for reasons the current leadership declines to discuss. This is not a recent decision.
The Through-Route Question
Transit logs exist for four centuries of outbound traffic through the gate toward GJ 92. Return logs for the corresponding period have gaps. The Irmandade knows what is in those gaps. The current leadership has declined to discuss that too.
Practical Information
Nascente is six hops from Gateway with two gate apertures — through-route between Ribeirão and GJ 92. Agricultural surplus feeds several systems. The minimum stellar primary produces the dim, close light characteristic of this stellar class. The residential districts have the layered, unhurried quality of a community that has had four centuries to decide what it is and has largely decided.
