THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KURASHIKI
KURASHIKI was named after a historic Japanese city associated with traditional craftsmanship and artisanal quality, which is either aspirational or ironic depending on how you feel about precision industrial processing as an heir to the artisanal tradition.
The Finishing Economy
The founders were not wrong about quality. Kurashiki in the Reach produces finished components and quality-certified assemblies from the intermediate goods that Matsue manufactures one gate hop away. The cooperative governance structure, the rotating administrative boards, the credentialing system that the Yongli Combine has repeatedly attempted to integrate into its own framework — all of it reflects the founding industrial cooperative's approach to doing careful, documented, certifiable work. The Commission's presence here focuses on quality certification compliance, which is not a political imposition but a commercial necessity for downstream buyers who need traceable components. Kurashiki built its business around provenance documentation before the Commission made it a requirement.
The system was developed in wave_4 by a community that knew exactly what role it would play in the corridor's supply chain, which is why the economic logic is coherent and the dependency risk was not discovered until thirty years ago.
The Contract
The bilateral supply relationship with Matsue is governed by a long-term contract renegotiated approximately thirty years back. The current terms include a pricing floor that protects Kurashiki's processing margin under normal conditions. They also include a volume-reduction clause that allows Matsue's industrial operators to reduce contracted supply if corridor pricing shifts.
The council members who signed the current contract did not fully understand the volume-reduction clause. This is documented in the cooperative's internal administrative correspondence from the renegotiation period. The clause allows Matsue to reduce its supply to Kurashiki — at precisely the moment when corridor pricing is shifting — which is precisely the moment when Kurashiki would have the least flexibility to adapt.
The Yongli Combine has been expanding finishing capacity in Matsue for the past eight years. This is not a secret. It is a public investment program with filed expansion permits. The Kurashiki cooperative council has not discussed the relationship between the Combine's Matsue expansion and the volume-reduction clause in any public session.
Practical Information
Kurashiki is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Whitfield Crossing and Matsue. The M1V primary suits an industrial processing economy — M-dwarf energy profiles work well for facilities with controlled energy input requirements. Surface agriculture exists but is not the system's function. What arrives from Matsue is components. What leaves toward the mid-reach is finished product with a provenance record attached.
