THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PEDRA FUNDA
PEDRA FUNDA means "deep stone," and the religious community that named it came here three hundred years ago to worship without interference, and has been doing exactly that since, which is either a remarkable success story or an extraordinary act of institutional isolation, depending on whether you are the community or the inner corridor's Catholic institutions.
What Three Centuries of Isolation Produces
The community is still Catholic. They say they are Catholic. The faith they practice uses the same name as the tradition they departed from, carries the same general architecture, and has been maintained with evident sincerity across three hundred years of M-dwarf light and deep frontier distance. Visiting clergy from the inner corridor who have managed to gain access have called it something else — not Catholic, they say, or not quite, or not anymore. The community's position is that three hundred years of sincere practice cannot be measured against a standard maintained by people who have never tried to maintain a living faith at this distance from everything else.
What has changed: the seasonal observances, which began as adapted liturgical calendar modifications, have incorporated astronomical elements tied to the M-dwarf's specific activity cycles. Stellar observation. Light-based ritual structure. A theology of stellar light that inner corridor clergy, when they have had access to enough of it to understand what they were looking at, have found they lack categories for. The community does not regard this as deviation. They regard it as what happens when you watch the same star for three hundred years with the attention that faith requires.
The Overtures That Stopped Coming
The inner corridor's Catholic institutional structures have, at various points over three centuries, expressed interest in sending representatives to assess the community's practice, offer guidance, and potentially bring them back into doctrinal alignment. These overtures have been declined politely every time. At some point — the specific moment is not recorded in any document that has reached the inner corridor — the inner corridor's institutions stopped sending overtures. Whether this represents acceptance, exhaustion, or the accumulation of enough declined invitations to constitute a message, neither party has said.
The community declines to discuss the content of their current theological practice with outside religious institutions. The Commission has no basis for interest. What Pedra Funda practices is, at hop 9, between Pedra Funda and whatever they believe is listening.
Practical Information
Pedra Funda is nine hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Sertão and GJ 868. The community is agriculturally self-sufficient — three centuries of M-dwarf farming, adapted cultivars, refined soil and water management. Medical equipment represents the critical external dependency. The governance is a synodal structure that functions as civil government, the boundary between religious and secular administration having blurred to irrelevance over three centuries. Visitors are received hospitably. Questions about the faith are answered in the language of the faith.
Adams of the Guide rates Pedra Funda: Three centuries of sincere practice. Outside assessment not invited.
