GJ 201 is the only junction in this section of the deep frontier. Three apertures, three corridors, three directions that require a decision. The system itself offers nothing to inform that decision. A K2 primary, warm enough for marginal habitability, cool enough to discourage settlement by anyone with access to survey data that includes alternatives. A rocky inner world with trace atmosphere. An outer gas giant with two captured moons, neither interesting. The habitable zone contains a body whose survey record describes as "geologically stable, hydrologically inert, atmospherically adequate" — the kind of assessment that reads as complimentary only if you have never seen a genuinely good world.

Nobody settled GJ 201 because nobody needed to. The junction's function is directional, not residential. One aperture connects inward toward Fernlicht at GJ 61, where the scholars maintain their isolation and their libraries. A second runs toward GJ 684A and the deep corridor that eventually reaches the furthest systems in the Reach. The third connects to GJ 481 and the spur toward Errai. The horizon station processes transits. The station's maintenance logs are the most complete record of traffic patterns in this part of the frontier, and they tell a specific story: traffic is thin, directional, and purposeful. The people who pass through GJ 201 know where they are going. They do not stop.

The junction topology is the only remarkable feature. In the inner Reach, a three-aperture junction would be a hub — a natural site for a market, a Commission post, an administrative presence. At hop 13, three apertures connecting three corridors that each carry fewer than a hundred transits per standard year does not create the density required for any of those institutions. The junction exists. The corridors it connects exist. The traffic that passes through exists. None of it aggregates into settlement pressure.

Survey teams have visited GJ 201 four times across three centuries. Each survey confirmed what the previous survey found: adequate conditions, no compelling reason. The fourth survey, conducted during wave_4 expansion, added a note that has been quietly circulated among corridor planners: "Junction topology suggests potential strategic value if corridor traffic increases by an order of magnitude." The note was filed. Corridor traffic has not increased by an order of magnitude. The note remains filed.

Gate Corporation maintenance visits occur on a rotating contract basis, approximately once per eighteen months — the longest rotation interval in the standard maintenance schedule, reserved for unsettled systems with multiple apertures that require more frequent gate calibration than single-aperture dead-ends but do not generate the traffic that justifies a permanent crew.

The junction is the last shared node for travelers heading in any of these directions. What happens at GJ 201 is farewells — the kind that are not spoken, because the people transiting through a dim K-dwarf junction at hop 13 are not the kind who announce their intentions. They transit, they choose an aperture, and the junction's logs record the direction without comment.
