THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 201
GJ 201 is the last junction before the deep corridor divides, which gives it a significance its stellar conditions do not support and its empty horizon station does not require.
The Parting of Ways
Three apertures. Three directions. The scholars at Fernlicht, the spur communities near Orchard's End and Errai, and the deep chain that eventually reaches Abzu. GJ 201 is the last shared node for travelers heading to any of these places. After this junction, the corridors diverge, and the people heading in each direction will not see each other at the same waypoint again.
The junction itself offers nothing to inform the choice. A K2 primary, warm enough for marginal habitability, cool enough to discourage settlement by anyone with access to survey data that includes alternatives. A rocky inner world with trace atmosphere. An outer gas giant with two captured moons. A habitable zone body whose survey record reads "geologically stable, hydrologically inert, atmospherically adequate" — the specific combination of words that means technically qualifying and practically uninspiring.
Nobody settled GJ 201 because the junction's value is directional, not residential. At hop 13, three apertures connecting three corridors that each carry fewer than a hundred transits per standard year does not aggregate into settlement pressure. In the inner Reach, a three-aperture junction would be a hub — a natural site for a Commission post, a market, an administrative presence. Here it is a decision point that nobody stays at long enough to warrant those things.
What the Logs Show
The maintenance logs are the most complete record of traffic patterns in this section of the frontier. They tell a specific story: traffic is thin, directional, and purposeful. The people who pass through GJ 201 know where they are going. They choose an aperture. The logs record the direction without comment.
A note in the fourth survey record, filed during wave-4 expansion, circulates quietly among corridor planners: "Junction topology suggests potential strategic value if corridor traffic increases by an order of magnitude." The note was filed. Corridor traffic has not increased by an order of magnitude. The note remains filed.
Practical Information
GJ 201 is thirteen hops from Gateway with three apertures connecting to Fernlicht, Orchard's End, and Sonnenkap. Gate Corporation maintenance visits occur approximately every eighteen months. No services beyond automated navigation. The habitable world is uninhabited and adequate.
