THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PUERTO ÚLTIMO
PUERTO ÚLTIMO means "last port," which it was for two hundred and sixty years, and then Encrucijada arrived one hop inward and Puerto Último became, for the first time in its history, a place on the way to somewhere.
The Long Quiet
The G0V primary is generous by outer-reach standards — warm, stable, good agricultural conditions. The founding Spanish-heritage families arrived three hundred years ago, built an agricultural community, and proceeded to be self-sufficient and remote for two and a half centuries. The isolation was not experienced as deprivation. It was experienced as the condition under which Puerto Último became fully itself: the names, the food, the music, the way the community marks its annual cycles — three hundred years of a heritage brought here deliberately and maintained deliberately.
That changed forty years ago. Encrucijada established its wave 5 hub, one of its five apertures opened toward GJ 197, and regular through-traffic arrived for the first time in the system's history. Vessels not headed to Puerto Último began appearing in the gate entry logs. The horizon station's docking infrastructure was not designed for this. The council debated whether to expand it.
The council chose expansion. The expansion is ongoing. The commercial opportunities the expansion has created are real. The families with interests near the gate approach have prospered. The families whose livelihoods are agricultural and remote from the gate have watched their community change in ways they did not elect. The community is not in conflict. It is in the process of discovering whether an identity maintained through two hundred and sixty years of quiet isolation can be maintained through forty years of becoming connected. The oldest residents experience this as loss. The youngest experience it as opportunity. The council experiences it as a three-year-old unresolved proposal to adjust representation weighting.
The Archive
Three hundred years of near-complete isolation produced a community that handled internal disputes through internal processes, and the records of those processes are in the community archive rather than in any Commission filing. Several involve land allocation decisions from the first two centuries that the founding-wave descendants consider settled and the later-wave settlers' descendants consider settled in ways that disadvantaged their predecessors. Not currently active. The records that could revive them are accessible and have not been reviewed externally.
Practical Information
Puerto Último is eight hops from Gateway with one gate aperture. The Commission upgraded from extended-cycle to annual inspection when Encrucijada's traffic increased the compliance profile. Some residents experience this as a consequence of connectivity they did not entirely choose. That is an accurate description of what it is.
